As others behind him begin to make a case for more carries, Ryan Mathews will still be getting the bulk of them.
The oft-injured running back was limited to two carries during the Philadelphia Eagles’ 34-3 rout of tbe Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday because of ankle stiffness, but head coach Doug Pederson still had his back.
“When Ryan is healthy, he’s the guy, and then we’ll mix Darren (Sproles) in there and you saw what Wendell can do and we know what Kenjon’s all about.”
Pederson explained the decision to limit Mathews.
“It never loosened up and kept getting stiff. Just opted on the side of caution more than anything else.”
Smallwood saw the most handoffs Sunday, toting the rock 17 times for 79 yards and a touchdown. Darren Sproles saw the most snaps of the backs and caught six passes for 128 yards and a score. Kenjon Barner carried the ball eight times for 42 yards and a score.
