Greg Hardy is a deplorable human being. Unless you’re a Cowboys’ fan desperate for a pass rush I’ve yet to find anyone who would even try to condone the disgraceful behavior that has tarnished his NFL career, and life as a whole. With interest in the free agent pass rusher at an all-time low, and by all-time low I mean non-existent, Hardy has decided to pursue another venture.
A report from Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting says that Hardy is not planning an NFL return, or more accurately the NFL is not planning on a Greg Hardy return. Instead Hardy is looking to transition away from the sport of football. “I’m very focused and excited to start my MMA career, I’m going to do this the right way, I can assure you of that.” Hardy said in a statement issued to MMAFighting.com. That’s sweet of him that he wants to try putting his fists to use the “right way” for once in his life.
Hardy has apparently been training for months, which of course makes him ready to make the leap to a professional MMA career against fighters who have trained their whole lives. I mean after all, it worked out tremendously for former WWE star CM Punk, didn’t it? Now, it doesn’t appear that Hardy is trying to make the same foolish leap to the highest level of the sport, but Punk also had far more training when he made his ill-advised decision. The good news is that after being arrested a few weeks ago for cocaine charges, he makes his way into a sport with strong drug testing guidelines. Now Hardy claims that someone else put the cocaine in his wallet, but something tells me that Hardy may well have been using it when he made this asinine decision. Hardy plans to make his likely failed debut as a heavyweight sometime in 2017.
In the ever so slightest defense of this choice, Hardy is as good at being an athlete as he is bad at being a human being. Still, there are very few athletes who could successfully make this transition. Freak (and apparently dirty) athletes like Brock Lesnar have made the jump. Herschel Walker who might just be in the greatest shape of any human being in the history of the planet made the jump. But for Hardy making this type of move at this stage of his life seems like a head-scratching choice in a life that’s already been filled with poor decisions. Whether he wins or loses in his eventual debut (and any subsequent fights) at least we can all see what many of us have wanted to see for a long time… Greg Hardy getting punched in the face.
That’s something we can all enjoy.
