One of the greatest Phillies pitchers of all-time, Jim Bunning, is recovering from a stroke he suffered last week.
The stroke occurred while Bunning was at his home in Kentucky, according to his family, on Tuesday night. He was transported to the hospital and remained there for the ensuing days, eventually being moved from the intensive care unit to the transitional care unit.
The Bunning family issued the following statement.
“Thanks to the attention of the doctors and nurses at St. Elizabeth, he has been provided skilled care that is leading him on the road to recovery. The Bunning Family wants to thank the first responders and medical personnel who have been treating Dad. We sincerely appreciate the thoughts and prayers of all who are concerned about our father’s health.”
Bunning won 89 games over the span of six seasons for the Phillies. After his playing career, he served as a state representative and a state senator.
Sunday was Bunning’s 85th birthday.
