Nelson Agholor took his step backward Monday, but will he have the opportunity to take a step forward Sunday when the Philadelphia Eagles visit Cincinnati to take on the Bengals.
Eagles head coach Doug Pederson obviously isn’t going to make up his mind about Agholor’s status this early in the week, but did comment on his second-year wide receiver during his Monday press conference.
“Again, I’m not going to come out and say that right now today. I’m going to get through this week of practice. Jordan will be okay with the ankle and [we] just [have] to see where Nelson is at, where his mind and head is at. He had a good week last week. So we’ll monitor that again later in the week,” he said.
Pederson admitted that he didn’t talk to Agholor after the game, but discussed what hopes he had for him coming out of making him inactive.
“The biggest thing is just seeing the way the offense kind of works, seeing the way the game kind of unfolds and how guys react in certain situations. And I wanted him to put himself in the game situations and see how he would react, see how he would play, see how he would run that route. It’s a lot easier to do that from a removed position where you can see it from a big picture and [with] a little bit calmer eyes, where the pressure and stress is not on you to perform. That’s what I’m hoping he takes away from this and learns from this down the road,” he said.
Agholor’s replacements, Bryce Treggs and Paul Turner, combined for 11 yards on one reception, which came from Treggs. Turner didn’t record a catch in 23 snaps.
“You know, again, a lot of it was design of the play, ball was going in other areas. You can evaluate off of 23 plays, but you would like to see more, obviously. So these next few weeks could be even more important for him. We had a few plays in the game plan for him, you know, him specifically. When Jordan got nicked up, we went more to the two tight end sets a little bit with Zach and [TE] Trey [Burton], so that sort of kept him a little bit on the sideline in those times,” Pederson said of Turner’s limited snaps.
