What a week for the Flyers. Not only did they increase their winning streak to nine games, but Steve Mason has played incredibly and Anthony Stolarz notched his first NHL shutout last night against the Detroit Red Wings.
And now, more good news. Jake Voracek was named the NHL’s First Star of the Week. From their website:
The National Hockey League announced today that forward Jakub Voracek has been named the NHL’s First Star of the Week from Dec. 5-11.
Voracek led all NHL players during the week with six assists and nine points in four games to help the Flyers extend their winning streak to nine consecutive games, the most of any team in the NHL this season.
He kicked off the week by posting the game-winning goal in overtime to help the Flyers to a 3-2 win over the Florida Panthers on Dec. 6. From there, he posted back-to-back four points games, both of which tied a career-best for a single game, leading the Flyers to a thrilling 6-5 comeback win over Edmonton on Thursday and a 4-2 win over the Dallas Stars on Saturday. He finished the week going scoreless in the club’s 1-0 overtime win at Detroit but logged over 22 minutes of ice-time.
Voracek leads the Flyers in overall scoring with 32 points (11g-21a), which is also tied for second overall in the NHL’s scoring race in 31 games.
He is tied for third overall in the NHL for points on the power play (13), while ranking second in the league in shots on goal (110).
Two weeks, two First Stars. Last week, Steve Mason won the honors.
