In what was a shocking move by Philly Mag on January 12th, removing ‘Birds 24/7’ with no adequate reason given, the latest rumor I came across last night was that Philly Mag will be doing away with all sports coverage. The latest to fall, from what I understand, will be Sixers beat writer, Derek Bodner, at the end of this month. It’s a crushing blow for all of us that enjoy his writing. The reasoning, from what I can gather, is that Philly Mag is having trouble monetizing their sports coverage. To me, that sounds more like a marketing problem that can easily be fixed, and not removing some of the better writers from the community they’ve created.
I reached out to Bodner for comment and he gave me the following statement: “I am currently an employee of Philadelphia Magazine, and do not wish to comment beyond that at this time.”
I also reached out to Philly Mag and have yet to receive any comment on the removal of ‘Birds 24/7’ or the future of their sports coverage.
There was another mention from a former Philly Mag employee to me that said, “There was some buzz that Philly Mag might be for sale, but not sure how solid that is.”
