Vinny Curry is currently getting paid like he’s the 10th best defensive end in football.
Yea Howie, you made a mistake.
Curry signed a five-year, $47.5 million extension last offseason and posted just 2 1/2 sacks and 26 tackles during a very disappointing 2016. The 28-year-old has shown that he can get after the quarterback, but stopping the run has always been his downfall and it’s why he can’t consistently stay on the field. Just to get a sense of how grossly overpaid Curry is, here’s the list of defensive ends right behind him on the average annual salary list.
- Derek Wolfe
- Jurrell Casey
- Everson Griffen
- Jabaal Sheard
- Cameron Wake
- Andre Branch
- Carlos Dunlap
- Mario Addison
- Cliff Avril
- Robert Ayers
Curry isn’t close to being in the same league as any of those guys.
This brings us to Derek Barnett now, who played some Wide 9 at Tennessee and beat Reggie White’s sack record at the school with 33. He can certainly get after the quarterback using his quick first step and ability to bend the edge, let’s just hope he can stop the run more consistently than Curry.
