Early this morning, we posted a story on former Sixer Doug Overton being charged with indecent exposure, stemming from an incident that occurred on the Bala Cynwyd trail over the weekend.
While Sean Brace and I were recording an episode of The Philly Influencer Spotlight this evening, Overton released an incredibly well-written statement. Here it is, via philly.com:
Overton said he walks his dog on the Cynwyd trail several times a week. On Sunday, “During the walk I felt the need to relieve myself. With the nearest bathroom nearly a mile away, I stepped off the trail and into a wooded area to take care of business in what I thought was a discreet manner,” he said in the statement emailed by the public relations firm of Jeff Worden.
“I then pulled up my sweat pants and returned to the trail to continue walking my dog. That is the only thing that happened. Unfortunately, it appears I wasn’t as discreet as I thought, and some misinterpreted what they saw. I sincerely apologize for my lapse of judgment and the confusion it caused.”
In court documents, that wasn’t what a couple described. Instead, they said that while they were running on the trail, they passed Overton, who they said “appeared to be touching himself around his genitals or peeing off to the side of the trail.” After the woman stopped to stretch while her husband continued on the trail, she said Overton walked past her with his penis exposed. A second person corroborated the story, saying she exchanged pleasantries with Overton, then noticed his penis was exposed.
Overton has been an analyst for Sixers pre- and post-game shows the last couple of seasons. A CSN spokeswoman released the following statement:
“We are aware of the charges against Doug Overton and have no further comment at this time.”
Lincoln University, where Overton is the men’s head basketball coach, released this statement:
“Mr. Overton has been employed by Lincoln University as the head men’s basketball coach since May 23, 2016. The University has made no changes to the employment status of Mr. Overton.”
