Maximus Decimus Meridius told his troops in Gladiator, “At my signal, unleash hell.” Leonidas gave us, “This is Sparta!” In this town, few when you think of a truly passionate speech. When you want insane and run through a brick wall material, we look no further than Brian Dawkins.
This morning, Tom Brady addressed the Patriots’ fan base. I was expecting something inspired. Instead I heard the following:
“What’s up Patriot Nation? Yeahhhhh (insert Jay Z “PSA” snippet). Thank you guys. Listen thank you guys for all your support all year. It’s been an incredible journey. We got one more to go. (Ladies begin to scream). It’s gonna be fun. It’s gonna be a lot of hard work. We’re playing a great team but I tell you what; we got a locker room full of guys that are ready for the challenge. (More women and like three dudes scream). And I know, we obviously can’t bring you all to Minnesota with us, maybe some of you can come. But you guys are with us. We know that, you guys know that, and we all know that. Patriots Nation is stronger than ever. (The same people scream again). We got one more to go. We’re gonna go out there and try to win it for you guys. And that’s all we got. We love you! Patriots out!” (Sad mic drop)
After I came back from spacing out over my H&R Block appointment, I went black over the flatlined speech. Now, I’m not a student of Brady or his speeches. Perhaps Foxboro is used to having a guy hype them up with the same tone as their weatherman. Brady has won a lot so he could easily have come out there and said nothing. I assume all of the 15 women and men in attendance would’ve still screamed. Regardless that was by far the calmest speech I have seen and heard in a long time. It was the Beach Boys of rally speeches.
All I could think of was:
