What’s happening in Philly this weekend: May 11-13

Each weekend, we will post some of the most unique social and cultural places to visit in addition to exciting events in and around the Philly area. We call it Philly Influencer’s Weekend Picks. Events Running Through the Weekend

1. Longwood Gardens Festival of Fountains

Where: Longwood Gardens, 1001 Longwood Road, Kennett Sq.
When: Runs through Sunday, September 30th

Longwood Gardens Festival of Fountains returns for the season this weekend. The marvelous and scenic garden terrain will be overflowing with water lily displays,  a meadow garden, and more. Throughout the months there will be live music, crafts, family-friendly, fireworks, and other events.

2. Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta

Where: Kelly Drive
When: Friday, May 11th-Saturday, May 12th

The Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta will be taking over Kelly Drive this weekend. Hundreds of universities from around the country and Canada will be rowing the Schuylkill River. Come see these amazing athletes thunderous speed through the course and cheer them on.

3. Jewels

Where: Academy of Music, 240 S. Broad Street
When: Thursday, May 10th-Sunday, May 13th

The Pennsylvania Ballet will be putting on a performance of Jewels this weekend. Come to the Academy of Music for what The New York Times called “It remains a perfect introduction to ballet: Few full-length story ballets are as satisfying.” George Balanchine’s work celebrates the three phases of his life.

4. Student Exhibition at PAFA

Where: Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, 118 N. Broad St.
When: Friday, May 11th-Sunday, June 3rd

This weekend kicks off the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts’ The 116th Annual Student Exhibition (ASE).  The institution’s BFA, third and fourth-year undergraduates, and second-year MFA students works will be on full display. These emerging artist will get the opportunity to “curate, install, and sell their own works in PAFA’s museum galleries.”

5. Mrs. Harrison 

Where: Azuka Theater, 302 S. Hicks St.
When: Runs Sunday, May 20th

The Azuka Theater will be the place to be to catch Mrs. Harrison through Sunday, May 20th. The world premiere by Philadelphia and Barrymore Award-winning playwright R. Eric Thomas masterfully sets the scene of a 10-year college reunion where two distinctive women find truth in their defining narratives.

6. Spruce Street Harbor Park

Where: Spruce Street Harbor Park, 301 S. Columbus Blvd.
When: Opens Friday, May 11th

Sustained by UNIVEST, Spruce Street Harbor Park opens this Friday. The beautiful summer gathering hotspot has hammocks, floating gardens, stellar and colorful lights, craft beer stands, and plenty of food from the area’s top restaurants. This weekend, look out for UNIVESTal. The festival will be full of live music performances, crafts, art displays, and more.

7. Blue Cross RiverRink Summerfest

Where: Blue Cross RiverRink, 101 S. Columbus Blvd.
When: Runs through Sunday, September 3rd

The Blue Cross RiverRink Summerfest kicks into full swing this Friday. There will be roller skating, the return of the carnival game area The Midway, mini golf, Chickie’s and Pete’s Crabshack, and the Franklin Fountain Cabin. Come out for the drinks, the waterfront splendor, and more.

8. Rittenhouse Square Fine Craft Fair

Where: Rittenhouse Square, 210 W. Rittenhouse Sq.
When: Friday, May 11th-Sunday, May 13th

The Rittenhouse Square Craft Fair will be opening this Friday. The downtown festivity space will have many vendors peddling paintings, jewelry, antiques, handmade soaps, candles, furnishings, and more.

9. Phillies Weekend

Where: Citizens Bank Park, 1 Citizens Bank Way
When: Friday, May 11th-Sunday, May 13th

The Philadelphia Phillies will be taking on the New York Mets in a three-game series this weekend. The NL East showdown will put the surging Phillies against a close rival in front of thousands of fans. Come out to the ballpark any day this weekend to see all the action.

10. Fight Night

Where: SugarHosue Casino,  1001 N. Delaware Ave
When: Friday, May 11th, 7PM

Speaking of live sporting events, KP Boxing will be proving in-your-face professional boxing this Friday night at the SugarHouse Casino. The featured fighters include Mykal Fox, Anthony Mercado, Michael Coffie, and Colby Madison.

11. D.L. Hughley

Where: Merriam Theater, 250 S. Broad St.
When: Friday, May 11th, 7PM & 10PM

One of The Original Kings of Comedy, radio host, political commentator, and actor will be coming to the City of Brotherly Love this Friday. Offering up the laughs for his comedy special Contrarian, the Merriam Theater. The two shows edited into one taped special. Bring your friends and family out for some gut-busting laughs.

12. Monica

Where: The Fillmore Philadelphia, 29 E. Allen St.
When: Friday, May 11th, 8PM

Dope shows will be featuring an evening with R&B singer Monica for Mother’s Day weekend. The “Angel of Mine” and “First Night” songstress became the first artist to top the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop charts in both the 90’s, 2000’s, and 2010’s. She has six solo studio albums under her belt and will be performing hits from each work in front of her Philadelphia fans.

13. Jorja Smith

Where: The Foundry, 29 E. Allen St.
When: Friday, May 11th, 9PM

Inside the same major entertainment venue as The Fillmore lies The Foundry. This Friday night Jorja Smith. The independent UK alternative R&B act and 2018 Brit Critics’ Choice Award winner will be releasing her first studio album in June.

14. Spring Art Star Craft Bazaar

Where: Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing, 101 S. Columbus Blvd.
When: Saturday, May 12th-Sunday, May 13th

The 2018 Spring Art Star Craft Bazaar is this Saturday at the Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing. There will be live music, food vendors, screen printers, a photo booth, and a craft making station at this free-to-enter event. There will also be countless merchants selling tons of home goods, body products, clothing, furniture, and other essentials.

15. 2nd Saturday Street Art Tours

Where: Various locations
When: Saturday, May 12th, 11AM-1PM & 2PM-4PM

Streets Dept’s 2nd Saturday Street Art Tours returned for the 2018 season last month. Every second Saturday Conrad Benner will be hosting a walking tour of Philadelphia’s most stunning street art, murals, and graffiti. This will be an immersive and informative tour full of colorful designs and great conversation.

16. Treetop Quest Opening 

Where: 51 Chamounix Dr.
When: Runs through Sunday, November 25th

Fairmount Park’s zip line adventure is finally here. Treetop Quest will raise you 60 feet above the ground in some areas and launch you into a fun day great obstacle courses, soaring heights, and plenty of fun activities.

17. IPA Champagne & Rosé Block Party

Where: Hawthornes Beer Cafe, 738 S. 11th St.
When: Saturday, May 12th, 12-8PM

Hawthornes Beer Cafe will be hosting their 9th annual IPA, Champagne, and Rosé Block Party this Saturday. The event is free to enter, will have live music, food trucks, and is kid and pet-friendly. There will be tremendous drink specials all night.

18. Philadelphia Taco Festival

Where: SugarHouse Casino, 1001 N. Delaware Ave.
When: Saturday, May 12th-Sunday, May 13th

SugarHouse Casino will be hosting the Philadelphia Taco Festival this Saturday from 12  p.m.-6p.m. Over 30 local eateries will have their best tacos up for grabs, you’ll be able to sample an ample amount of tequila, and there will be a build-your-own-margarita station. There will be a live mariachi band, a DJ, prizes, and so much more.

19. Marshmello

Where: Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing, 601 N Christopher Columbus Blvd.
When: Saturday, May 12th, 5PM

Philadelphia DJ and producer Marshmello will be holding a concert in front of his home crowd this Saturday evening. This year he’s done great collaborations with British singer Anne-Marie on the track “Friends” and with hit-making rapper Logic for “Everyday.”

20. Greta Van Fleet

Where: Electric Factory, 421 N. 7th St.
When: Saturday, May 12th, 8:30PM

Greta Van Fleet will be doing a live concert at the Electric Factory this Saturday night. The Billboard Mainstream Rock and Active Rock chart toppers have released two studio albums in total. The “Highway Tune” rockers will be putting on an electrified show that you don’t want to miss.

21. Mother’s Day

Where: Various locations
When: Sunday, May 13th

One of the most adoring and beloved days of the year is this Sunday. Mother’s Day in Philadelphia offers up several options. The Barnes Foundation has a Treat Mom promotion–book a tour for you and your mom any day this May. Mothers also get to pick a complimentary gift at the Barnes Shop. Be sure to stop by Longwood Gardens, Franklin Square, several restaurants, and others all have plenty of ways to put a smile on the face of the special mom in your life.

22. Punk in Drublic Craft Beer and Music Festival

Where: Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing, 601 N Christopher Columbus Blvd.
When: Sunday, May 13th, 1PM-10PM

For the last event on this list, you can head back over to the Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing. The Punk in Drublic Craft Beer and Music Festival is this Sunday afternoon. Come enjoy over one hundred craft beer options and take in the sounds of NOFX, Bad Religion, and more.
