The Philadelphia Eagles love their pass rushers, but are hoping that one of their newest defensive weapons can be more than that in Vic Fangio’s defense in 2024.
Bryce Huff joined the Eagles as a free agent signing from the New York Jets earlier this year, signing a three-year, $51.1 million deal. Huff is coming into the 2024 campaign fresh of a career-best season with the Jets, where he totaled 10 sacks, 10 tackles for loss (TFL’s), and 21 quarterback hits.
The 6-feet-3, 255 lb. pass rusher mainly featured on third downs in New York, but will be asked by Fangio to play a much larger role than he’s been previously asked to do as an pro player.
In the early days of training camp, Fangio praised Huff’s abilities as an impact player and also admitted that consistent work at his new role will help him in the longevity of his first season in Philadelphia.
“Well, I think everybody thought he could, and knowing that the floor was just rush downs, but he’s taken the challenge on very well, and I do think he has the talent to do what we want him to do,” Fangio said Thursday when asked about Huff’s adjustment to a new role. “It’s just he’s got get familiar with doing it. So, it will be a work in progress. Does he look like he can do it today? No. I do think eventually he will.
“[We want him to] Constantly show improvement,” Fangio added. “It’s more of a feel. He has the talent to do it, but he’s never been asked to do it I don’t think in college nor with the Jets. So, it’s new and he has to become more proficient at it.”
Huff is one of several new faces in the Eagles defense this season, being joined by linebacker Devin White, as well as rookie cornerbacks Cooper Dejean and Quinyon Mitchell.
