The Philadelphia Eagles defense is starting to take shape ahead of the 2025 NFL season.
Andrew Mukuba became the newest face of Vic Fangio’s defense after being selected with the last pick of the NFL Draft’s second round (No. 64 overall). Mukuba joins Alabama linebacker Jihaad Campbell as the newest members of the Eagles franchise.
“I’m glad I’m here. I’m glad I’m with the Eagles and I’m ready to compete in everything,” Mukuba said in a press conference Friday night. “I was sitting there just waiting for my phone to ring. As soon as I saw who it was, you should have seen how fast I jumped out of my seat.”
The 22-year-old Mukuba played four collegiate seasons, with his first three coming at Clemson University. He earned ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year and Third-Team All-ACC honors, while also being named a Freshman All-American.
He concluded his NCAA career at Texas, where he totaled 69 tackles, a career-high five interceptions, and one forced fumble. Mukuba was named to the SEC’s Third-Team as the Longhorns were part of the College Football Playoffs.
Born in Zimbabwe, Mukuba immigrated to the United States when he was 9-years-old.
“We felt like throughout this process this guy just did everything, checked all of the boxes, and that was really what we’re looking for in that position,” Eagles executive vice president/general manager Howie Roseman said.
“The guy has been durable, he’s a heck of a player, and I think our fans are going to love his style of play. I know that’s what jumps off the tape to us.”
It looks to be Mukuba’s job to lose at free safety. Reed Blankenship remains the Eagles’ starting strong safety while Tristan McCollum will fight with Mukuba to earn the starting nod.
The Eagles will conclude their picks today from Green Bay as Rounds 4-7 take place.
