Phillies News: Domonic Brown Possibly Done for the Year, Larry Bowa Heading to Miami?

Reports are now surfacing that Domonic Brown may miss the remainder of the season due to a concussion suffered after falling over a railing trying to [terribly] field a fly ball in the game against the Mets on Wednesday. According to CSN’s Jim Salisbury, Brown was diagnosed with a concussion today and will probably miss the rest of the season.

I’m not certain the lineup will miss Brown’s .228/.284/.349 line with five homers and 25 RBIs in 63 games, but a concussion is never a laughing matter, so I hope Brown recovers quickly.

Here’s the play in which Brown suffered the concussion:

Also, we might not be seeing much of Larry Bowa anymore, as he’s reportedly a candidate for the managing job for the Miami Marlins, according to CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman.

With a wide-ranging search the expectation, though, several other prominent names are expected to come up, possibly including Dusty Baker, Bud Black, Ron Gardenhire, Bobby Valentine, Willie Randolph, Larry Bowa, Jerry Manuel, Jim Riggleman, Rick Renteria and many, many others.

Loria, a New Yorker, is said to long be an admirer of Mattingly, and the owner has drawn from his own New York experiences before, once hiring Tino Martinez as hitting coach and a couple times previously considering Valentine, the former Mets manager. Mattingly has won praise for his steady hand and up-front approach from Dodgers veterans, but the expectations are sky-high for baseball’s first $300 million team, which also happens to be led by a new front office regime this year.

The Miami Herald and FoxSports.com, which suggested Jennings is likely out of the dugout chair at year’s end, described some possible front office tension and potential intrigue, with both outlets saying there were signs that the longstanding close relationship between Jennings and Loria was showing signs of being “strained.” Both outlets also suggested there could be a prominent role for assistant GM Michael Berger, who has assumed some GM type duties while Jennings has managed the team.

Mattingly appears to be the frontrunner for the position, because everyone expects the Dodgers to crash and burn like they usually do in the fall. And if Bowa is among those candidates the Marlins want to hire, I’m not so sure he’ll even crack the top five. While it appears Marlins owner, Jeffrey Loria, wants an experienced manager to head his team, I’m not sure Bowa would be the right fit down in Miami. But you never know…
