It can’t get any worse can it?
That’s what I was thinking last week when the Philadelphia Eagles were penalized 14 times for 111 yards. But it didn’t get better during Sunday’s 27-20 loss against the Washington Redskins, 13 more flags for 114 yards.
Yikes!
The Eagles have averaged 9.8 penalties per game, which is the worst mark in the league and are second worst with 80.8 penalty yards per contest. They’re on pace to accumulate 156.8 penalties this season, which would be the third most in the history of the league. Only the 2011 Oakland Raiders (163) and 1998 Kansas City Chiefs (158) would be worse.
“Penalties and third downs, that’s the name of the game,” Pederson said Sunday after the loss to Washington. “It starts with me. I have to go back and evaluate. It is just a discipline thing. I have to look if our guys are in position, are they out of position, are they moving their feet, not moving their feet. Whatever they are doing to cause the penalties, some of them are legit, obviously, but it is an area we definitely have to clean up, that and third down.”
The offensive line has been the most responsible for the flags, being penalized 16 times according to nflpenalties.com. The secondary aren’t too far behind with 13 penalties.

Center Jason Kelce has the most penalties with six, while Jason Peters is second with five. Kelce leads the NFL with four holding calls and Peters has committed a quartet of false starts.
If the undisciplined play continues, forget about trying to extend your season come the winter.
