1. Closing  Soon: Independence After Hours

Independence After Hours programming will call it quits on its 2019 season this Saturday. From the Tippler’s Tour to dining at the historic City Tavern, don’t miss out on getting drinks and food in Old City with a twist. This immersive experience is unique and one-of-a-kind.

2. Closing  Soon: Open Studio Tours

This Sunday is the last day for Open Studio Tours. Bring your friends out to see talented artisans and creatives in their spaces painting, sculpting, sketching, and more. Finished work and gallery pieces will also be on display throughout the entire series.

3. Closing Soon: Young Frankenstein

The Walnut Street Theatre’s Young Frankenstein run will come to an end this Sunday. The celebrated Brooks and Meehan musical, based on the hit film, features laughs and great fun. Don’t miss your chance to see this great production featuring talented and skilled performers.

4. Closing Soon: Site/Sound Festival

When: runs through Saturday, October 19

Site/Sound, the large-scale art installations created through sound and light projection, ends this weekend. The festival has presented a diverse mix of Jazz, Folk, World, Contemporary Classical, Soundscapes, and Electronic music, as well as dance and performance art. This Saturday there is a sand mandala meditation and performances.

5. Philadelphia Film Festival

The 28th Annual Philadelphia Film Festival kicks off this week. The film showcase will have many top-tier selections that have been buzzing through the movie festival cycle this season. From award-winning features to fantastic shorts and documentaries, there’s something for every movie lover.

6. Rent at the Merriam Theater

The Merriam Theater will be lit up with talent when Rent comes to town this weekend. Jonathan Larson’s show-stopping and hit musical is full of phenomenal songs and follows the interlocked lives of seven struggling artists following their dreams.

7. Pennsylvania Wine Month

When: Runs through Thursday, October 31st

October is Pennsylvania Wine Month. There are special things to do, taste, and discover all across the city. High Street on Market. Several great locations like High Street on Market, FondGood King Tavern, and several other establishments have selected great wines for you. Jet Wine Bar will have a wine garden event featuring local wines this Saturday. From flights of PA wines to an expanded wine glass menu, there’s something for everyone.

8. Witches & Wizards Weekend in Chestnut Hill

Where: Various locations

When: Runs through Saturday, October 19

Each year Chestnut Hill gets taken over by aspiring wizards and Quidditch players. The 2019 Chestnut Hill Harry Potter Festival & Quidditch Tournament begins this Friday. There will be plenty of activities including a Brotherly Love Cup Quidditch Tournament, a costume contest, a Brews & Broomsticks Pub Crawl, and more at this magical gathering.

9. Oktoberfest at 23rd Street Armory

When: October 18-19

The 23rd Street Armory will be fueling the area with German beers and cultural cuisine all weekend long. There will be live music each day of this event. There will be four overall sessions during the three-day event in which up to 1,600 people will have the option to drink a multitude of samples.

10. Hoda Kotb

This Friday, Today show co-anchor Hoda Kotb will be a the Parkway Central Library talking about her new book titled, I Really Needed This Today: Words to Live By. She’ll discuss the collection of uplifting and humorous quotes that inspire her Instagram quotes.

11. William Penn’s 375th Birthday Party at City Hall

William Penn’s 375th birthday party will be taking over City Hall this Friday. There will be live music, a Mural Arts project, silhouette making, discussions, and more. come to the Courtyard Stage for all of the historical insights and fun.

12. Patawili

When: Friday, October 18 |  7:30 p.m. – 9 p.m.

Celebrating the Panay Island of the Philippines, Patawili, will have traditional food, dance, and music. There will be a free dress rehearsal this Friday night. Sunday, there will be a performance and dinner at this cultural celebration.

13. Kulu Mele’s Ogun & the People: Celebrating 50 Years

Where: The African American Museum in Philadelphia |  701 Arch St

When: Friday, October 18 |  7:30 p.m. – 9 p.m.

Come to The African American Museum in Philadelphia this Friday night for a bash heralding Kulu Mele’s Ogun & the People. There will be a reception, a book signing with autographs, and more for this African-centered book for all ages.

The Franklin Institute opens its new exhibit The Worst-Case Scenario: Survival Experience this Saturday. The survival-driven experience features real-world success stories of people who endured worst-case situations. There’s a Survival Gymnasium with 13 interactive scenarios to test and build your own worst-case survival skills.

15. Creepy Crawly Saturday at the Please Touch Museum

Bring your entire family out to the Please Touch Museum this Saturday. This weekend features Creepy Crawly Saturday. There will be a creative arts session, trick-or-treating, a musical performance, a chef demonstration, and so much.

16. Harvest Festival at Reading Terminal Market

When: Saturday, October 19 |10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

The 2017 Reading Terminal Market Harvest festival is this Saturday. Filbert Street will be shut down to accommodate this massive local event. This cool urban farm will have hay bales all around, corn stalks, a beer garden, rides, a pumpkin patch where your entire family can take pictures, live music, crafts, food, and more.

17. HRTS in the Park

When: Saturday, October 19 | 12 p.m.- 2 p.m.

This Saturday, Philadelphia upcycle artist Eazy Denim will be hosting a free HRTS in the Park art class in LOVE Park. The HRTS in the Park painting experience is intended to bring the Philadelphia community together by providing an outlet for children to freely express their creativity. Using his knowledge of art, artist Eazy Denim will guide and assist participants throughout the two-hour art extravaganza. HRTS in the Park is a free children’s painting experience and is limited to 50 participants. Attendees will be provided art supplies and HRT pins to decorate, free of charge.

18. Peoplehood Parade

Where: Starts at the Paul Robeson House | 4951 Walnut St

When: Saturday, October 19 | 1-3:30 p.m

The Peoplehood Parade celebrates the City of Brotherly Love’s diversity and sense of community. The one-of-a-kind celebration allows neighbors from across the city to come together and express their artwork, costumes, banners, and uplifting words.

19. Murder-Mystery Play at Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion

When: October 19-20

The Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion welcomes you to this murder mystery event. This year’s interactive play Who Killed Shakespeare? features a wild unfolding ride. One of Shakespeare’s characters killed the famous playwright. You’ll get a clipboard with a list of suspects. As you move from room to room inside the Mansion, you’ll have to put the pieces together.

20. Fight Night at The Met

The Met Philadelphia hosts Bouts on Broad this Saturday night. Come to the renovated entertainment space for great fights under the lights. This event, featuring strength and skill, provides excitement and in-your-face action.

21. Stars vs. Flyers

When: Saturday, October 19 | 7 p.m.

Speaking of sporting events, The Philadelphia Flyers will be hosting the Dallas Stars in their third home game of the season. The Wells Fargo Center will be rocking and filled with some of the best fans in sports. The Flyers look to extend their record and get their third win of the newly unfolding season.

22. Charli XCX

Charli XCX will be playing at Spring Garden Street’s Union  Transfer this Saturday night. The “Boys” dance-pop singer-songwriter released her third studio album last month. Charli XCX fans will be out in droves to see the hitmaking act.

23. Sabrina Claudio

24. AIDS Walk Philly 5K Walk/Run

Philadelphians are always extending themselves for a great cause. This Sunday is no different.  The 32nd Annual Philadelphia AIDS 5k and Walk will be taking place in front of the Philadelphia Art Museum. This charitable run raises funds and awareness for one of the most devastating viruses plaguing the globe.

25. Red Bulls vs. Union

26. Twenty One Pilots

Twenty One Pilots presented by Radio 104.5

Radio 104.5 will be bringing Twenty One Pilots to the Wells Fargo Center this Sunday night. The  “Stressed Out”, “Ride”, and “Heathens” alternative rock group are Grammy winners and they released their fifth studio album last year.

27. Angela Yee’s Lip Service Live

When: Sunday, October 20 | 8 p.m.

Angela Yee brings her “Angela Yee’s Lip Service” podcast to Philly this Sunday for a live taping. The popular broadcast provides an outlet for women to express themselves and give men a glimpse into how they think. The raw and in-your-face “The Breakfast Club” host and personality will be bringing everything to the table this Sunday.
