Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni will have two big holes to fill on his coaching staff ahead of the 2023 NFL season.
Offensive coordinator Shane Steichen and defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon both left the Eagles on Tuesday after signing as new head coaches elsewhere. Steichen has joined the Indianapolis Colts as their new head coach while Gannon joined the Arizona Cardinals.
Steichen was hired as the Eagles’ offensive coordinator in 2021 after two seasons in the same role with the Los Angeles Chargers (one being on an interim basis). Steichen took over playcalling duties in the middle of his first season, which carried over to the 2022 season.
In Steichen’s first full season as the Eagles’ playcaller in 2022, the Eagles scored a franchise-record 477 points, including team records in total TDs (59), scrimmage TDs (57), and rushing TDs (32). The Eagles also finished the regular season with the highest third-down conversion rate (45.9%) and red zone TD efficiency rate (67.8%) in team history.
Led by MVP candidate Jalen Hurts, the Eagles scored 31+ points in each of their three playoff games, including Sunday’s Super Bowl 57 defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Gannon was hired by Sirianni also in 2021 and played a key role in the Eagles defensive success in 2022. The Eagles had the league’s No. 1 pass defense and No. 2 total defense, while setting a franchise record with 70 sacks in the regular season, as well as eight in the playoffs.
The Eagles also became the first NFL team to have four individual players with 10+ sacks in the same season in NFL history. Linebacker Haason Reddick led the front with a career-high 16 sacks and a franchise-record 3.5 in the playoffs while Brandon Graham enjoyed his first double-digit sack campaign (11 sacks) in his 13th NFL season.
Cornerbacks James Bradberry and Darius Slay also excelled, with Bradberry earning All-Pro honors after finishing with the third-lowest passer rating and the third-most passes defensed. The duo were the only cornerback tandem in the league to each produce 14+ pass deflections and 3+ interceptions.
