The Morning Brew for August 17, 2015

The Eagles opened up the preseason is fantastic fashion, with a 36-10 drumming of the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. Yeah, Cody Parkey missed a few field goals. Yeah, it’s preseason game one. But there was some stuff to get excited about, but also temper expectations for the time being.

Some Tebow highlights for your viewing pleasure, via The Big Lead.

Chip likes how Timmy threw the football.

Here’s our own Patrick Wall’s review of the game.

The Phillies have cooled down considerably and were swept by the Milwaukee Brewers this weekend. That makes it a clean sweep for the season as the Phillies won’t play the Brewers again this year, and that’s probably a good great thing. The horror is back.

Chase Utley, however, is staying hot and making a great case for a team to take a chance on him if they can land him via trade from the Phillies.

Joel Embiid will reportedly undergo surgery on his foot tomorrow.

Jason Day beat out Jordan Spieth in a hell of a contest to take the PGA Championship on Sunday.

Brewers prospect, David Denson, became the first active Major League Baseball player to come out and say he was gay. Here’s a good story on him.

Chiefs safety Eric Berry returned to the football field Saturday night after being declared cancer-free in May. It was an amazing moment.

New Flyers head coach, Dave Hakstol, took with him a cartel of beat reporters to Olive Garden last week to get to know them.

Geno Smith is throwing the football around with a fractured jaw. The Jets don’t like it.

Steelers linebacker, James Harrison, is making his kids give back their participation trophies. While I understand Harrison’s initial argument that nobody should be entitled to anything, this quote from Patrick Redford of Deadspin is pretty much right on the money.

Approaching everything like it’s a competition isn’t necessarily the healthiest way to go through life either. This mentality works for elite athletes, who often have to have militant self-belief to make it in their field, but cooperation is essential too. Lest we forget, Harrison once beat up his girlfriend, smashed down a door, and broke her cell phone to prevent her from calling the cops over an argument about the baptism of his older son. This is the problem solving strategy of an all-the-time, nonstop competitor.
