In the Hey, he can’t say that but we can file, Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis spoke with Sports Illustrated in their current issue and pulled no punches when talking about his former and now current team when they went to two straight AFC Championship games with Mark Sanchez leading the way. Revis pretty much said it was fool’s luck. [New York Daily News via Sports Illustrated.]
“We almost made it, and we didn’t have a quarterback,” Revis tells SI. The story then notes how Revis maybe realized how that came across and adds, “Mark was solid. He wasn’t elite.”
Looking back, it’s easy to say the Jets didn’t have a quarterback those years because pretty much nobody remembers those years. The Jets had a fantastic defense at the top of the league, with an offensive game plan that was little better than what we see the Cleveland Browns execute on a yearly basis. At the time, Sanchez was winning in spite of a poor overall offensive game with some fairly average running backs. In six playoff games, he went 4-2 with nine touchdowns and three interceptions. His QB rating was a not-to-shabby 94.3. Once the defense on that Jets team started waning, so did Sanchez.
Clearly, Sanchez isn’t a franchise quarterback. He stepped in last season for the Eagles and did a good job until he was called on to finish the season. Sure, the teams got harder, but Sanchez’s play left a lot to be desired. As a backup, the Eagles could have done a whole lot more worse than re-signing him for this season. If Sam Bradford, who I think will be the starting quarterback of the team, gets injured and is out for an extended period of time, we can all kiss our playoff hopes goodbye.
