Howie Roseman’s Silence on a New Head of Personnel Is Quite Telling

He’s baaaack! Howie Roseman is back making key decisions with the Philadelphia Eagles whether we like it or not. Roseman and the rest of the Eagles’ brass are in Mobile, Alabama for the Senior Bowl this week. Eagles beat reporter for 97.5 The Fanatic and Philly Mag‘s Tim McManus had the opportunity to catch up with Roseman and they covered quite a few interesting topics from Sam Bradford to guys the Eagles are scouting like North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz.

One of the positives from the interview is that Roseman stated that “he never stopped watching tape on prospects and said he has trust in the scouting staff.” The bad news is that Roseman has been responsible for some awful moves in the past, so I really hope this scouting team is better than what we’ve had in the past.

Some of Roseman’s notable bust draft picks are: Danny Watkins, Marcus Smith and Daniel Te’o-Nesheim. Roseman has been pretty bad with free-agent signings as well with the likes of Nnamdi Asomugha, Bradley Fletcher, Vince Young and everyone’s favorite Cary Williams.

Here are some of the highlights from Roseman’s comments.

On Sam Bradford:

Sam’s a good player. Coach spoke about it, and we talk about experts in quarterbacks, you talk about a guy that played the position, a guy that has coached the position. We’re very fortunate about the amount of quarterback expertise that we have on this staff. We’re able to get their opinions fresh and then know that it’s a very talented guy that obviously finished the season strong. We hear from his teammates as we met with them that they liked him as well. That all kind of factors into it but it’s still early in the offseason, so we’ve got a lot of decisions to make and that will be part of the process.”

On Carson Wentz and his talents:

An incredibly talented guy, obviously. He’s got a lot of things you’re looking for. Now he’s got an opportunity to go against some of the best guys in the country, so for him to come here, learn a pro system, get acclimated with it quickly. It’s a challenge for quarterbacks in these games.”

Regarding the search for a new personnel man:

I think Jeffrey [Lurie] talked about that a little bit, and I think I’d just defer to his comments from his press conference.”

The comment on the search for a new personnel man I find hilarious. Clearly Roseman doesn’t want to relinquish ANY power that he has on this team to anyone. I just believe that for this team to ultimately be successful, Roseman can’t be the main guy making personnel decisions.

It’s a new year though and a new coaching staff. I will continue to coach myself up until I get on board with what I feel were some poor decisions the Eagles have made since the season ended.
