Vigdor: This Is Why I Hate the Doug Pederson Hiring

Doug Pederson is set to become the next head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. While I’m sure that Pederson is probably a very swell guy, I think the Eagles sold themselves short with the Pederson hire. People thought I was crazy when I thought that Tom Coughlin would make a good coach here, even though most likely it would’ve only been for a few years. I’m well aware that the Giants weren’t great over the last few years, but look at how awful their defense was.

Back to Pederson, he’s being called “Andy Reid Light” but “Andy Reid Heavy” ultimately didn’t bring this city a championship. At the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about, so if “heavy” didn’t get us a title, what makes people think that “light” can? Just take a look at yesterday’s Chiefs-Patriots game. My main issues with Dougie fresh as head coach lie with my distrust of the disgrace that has become of our upper management.

While some at PhillyInfluencer.com are okay with Pederson as the guy to lead this team, I am far from okay with this decision. I shall move on after this article and support Pederson, like I would whoever the coach was, but I need a moment to vent. So, let’s take a closer look at why I’m not sold on Doug Pederson.

Jeffrey Lurie

What the hell is Lurie doing? Instead of moving forward, he’s going backwards. I give him all the credit in the world for having the balls to rid this team of that cancer known as Chip Kelly. However, bringing that weasel Howie Roseman back was a ginormous mistake. Roseman was stripped of the player-evaluation duties in the Eagles front-office shake-up of early 2015.

Lurie once had said of Roseman:

I came to the conclusion that the person that was providing by far the best talent evaluation in the building was Howie Roseman.”

Here’s a question for Jeffrey Lurie. If Roseman was such a great talent evaluator, why did Lurie relieve him of those duties in the first place? And why when he was relieved of those duties did no other team go after him? There were no interviews, no calls. Nothing. Not a peep.

They say that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different result. I’m not sure Jeffrey ever heard of that statement.

Howie Roseman

You could probably gather from the above that I’m not the biggest Roseman fan. I don’t think he’s a great talent evaluator. He’s not a football guy. But then again, neither was Joe Banner. I guess Jeff Lurie just has a boner for non-football guys making key decisions on a football team. Back to that weasel Howie. At one time he was at least able to see one of his weaknesses, as he indicated via Paul Domowitch.

At some point, you get entrenched into what your team needs. And because we’re so determined to win a championship as quickly as possible, we wanted to address those [needs] as quickly as possible. When you look back at the moves, particularly in the draft, that we’ve made successfully, it was situations where we took the best players [rather than the best player at the position of greatest need]. It’s something I believe in.”

While he’s had some wins in relation to the draft and free-agency with guys like Fletcher Cox, Jordan Mathews and Connor Barwin, he’s had quite the number of failures with guys like Danny Watkins, Marcus Smith, Nnamdi Asomugha, Cary Williams and Bradley Fletcher. One could certainly argue that his failures have hurt this team way more than any wins have helped the team.

But more so with anything with Roseman, it’s his need to be the “guy” in Philly that makes me loathe him. If he was this amazing genius, I’d have no problem with him wanting to be the guy to make decisions. But his decisions aren’t great and this organization should have actual football guys in the decision making process (not fans like Ron Jaworski). Therefore, how can I value Roseman’s opinion as it pertains to Pederson, when his track record sucks?

Doug Pederson

Did I mention something about “yes” men above? That’s right, I did. That leads me to Doug Pederson himself. Again, my feelings are nothing personal against him. In 1999 Pederson signed with the Eagles to serve as a temporary starter until then-rookie Donovan McNabb was ready to start. In January of 2009, Pederson was hired as the offensive quality control coach for the Eagles. In 2011, he was promoted to quarterbacks coach. Pederson was then hired by Kansas City to serve as offensive coordinator for Andy Reid’s Chiefs in 2013. Pederson has definitely put in his work, but what makes one think that he’s the guy to lead this team? Why, because Andy Reid said so? Sorry, that doesn’t cut it for me.

Is Pederson supposed to be a good coach like Andy Reid just because he’s coached under Reid? Sorry, that doesn’t cut it for me either. This Eagles’ team as is currently structured certainly is soft mentally. How many times did an Eagles’ player bitch and moan last year? Some players didn’t like playing for Kelly. Tough shit! The everyday person doesn’t like their boss (though I love all my current bosses), but guess what? We suck it up and deal with it. Not this Eagles’ team.

The team quit on Chip Kelly and this city and it was a disgrace. While I’m aware some of these players won’t return next season, the Birds can’t get rid of the whole team. This team needs someone that they can respect and I don’t think that Pederson is that guy. I think the Eagles could’ve gotten someone in between a Pederson and Chip Kelly who had a better temperament for this team. But, when all was said and done, Lurie and Roseman went with the safe bet. That’s typical of them.

We just witnessed one of the worst coaching searches in recent history regardless of what people like Ron Jaworski say. If that’s any indication of what we can expect in the near future, well then we as Philly fans will have to suffer through a few more years (at least) of mediocrity at best.
