When the Eagles fired Chip Kelly, I thought that maybe Jeffrey Lurie and company would try something different. You know, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Some might consider the coaches Lurie has hired over his tenure as Eagles owner the definition of insanity.
Hey, it worked with Andy Reid. There’s no denying that. But it hasn’t worked for Rich Kotite, Ray Rhodes or Chip Kelly. So one might think with the defensive talent this team has and with how poorly coached they were the last few years that a defensive coach would make sense as the next head coach. But the Eagles’ brass went with Doug Pederson – a complete unknown as a head coach.
Granted, they gave Pederson a hell of a staff, but that’s likely to mask any mistakes he makes along the way. And he’ll definitely make a lot of mistakes.
The funny part is that Sean McDermott, the former Eagles’ defensive coordinator and current Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator, went on 97.5 The Fanatic to pretty much beg for an interview – or so we thought. It sounds like around the time he went on the 97.5 Morning Show, he talked to the Eagles. While the Eagles basically said, “Thanks, but no thanks,” there’s a little bit more to the story. And yesterday, while he’s preparing for the Super Bowl, he told us exactly how that went.
We did talk,” McDermott said Monday during Super Bowl media night. “We had some preliminary talks. It was clear from the beginning they wanted to go offense.”
Does McDermott have a motive to lie? I don’t think so. Sure, he’d love to be a head coach in the league, but I’m pretty sure even my unborn child knew the Eagles wanted an offensive coach, regardless of the bullshit spewed by Ron Jaworski, who was “included” in the coaching search as some sort of weird PR move.
So don’t feed us the BS of not caring whether they hired a defensive or offensive coach. Don’t lie to us.
