The Eagles Are Going “Scorched Earth” to Get a Franchise Quarterback

The Eagles don’t exactly have a franchise quarterback on their roster with Sam Bradford and Chase Daniel. While it could be worse, the Eagles apparently aren’t wasting any time in trying to find a new franchise quarterback, according to a report from Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio.

With more than $24 million tied up this year in the top two spots on the depth chart, the Eagles now seem intent on finding a rookie who will supplant both of them. So intent that Lurie is personally attending private workouts and get-togethers with multiple 2016 draft prospects at the position.

Unless it’s a smokescreen even more elaborate than the shenanigans of Viktor and Giselle St. Clair, the Eagles have decided to go scorched earth in an effort to get the best quarterback they’ve had since Donovan McNabb (No. 2 in 1999) with the eighth overall selection in the 2016 draft.

So, is it a smokescreen? It’s hard to tell. It’s entirely plausible for the Eagles to draft a guy they believe to be a franchise quarterback in the first round and have him be the third-string quarterback for a year, or even two, as he gets acclimated to the NFL. They’ve already worked out guys like Carson Wentz, Jared Goff (and even wined and dined them), and they’re going to work out Christian Hackenberg. As ridiculous as drafting a quarterback in the first round sounds due to having Bradford and Daniel, and with other needs, I could absolutely see this happening. A smokescreen? I don’t buy it.

Watch Florio talk about it below.
