Doug Pederson on Trading up in the Draft: “Anything Is Possible”

Carson Wentz or Jared Goff?

Doug Pederson appears content with either, but would the Philadelphia Eagles trade up in next week’s to select whomever the Los Angeles Rams don’t take at No. 1?

“Anything is possible,” the head coach said while meeting with reporters Monday.

Pederson stated that California’s Goff and North Dakota State’s Wentz are “pretty even” and there’s “not much separation” between the two. “From all the physical tools, both of them are extremely gifted there,” he said. “They have good arm strength, mobility, obviously Carson is a little bigger, maybe a little better athlete right now.” Pederson added, “I like him. He’s got everything you want in a quarterback at this level. You never know. Quarterback is a unique position at the National Football League level. Guys come in here and there’s an expectation level that they have, there’s an expectation level that we have as a coaching staff. I like him, I like his arm strength, his mobility, he’s a bigger kid. I think he’s got all the tools to be an NFL quarterback.”

Pederson also said that Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch “isn’t that far” from the two, although he hinted that at No. 8 the Eagles might be looking at a different position. “For us at No. 8, you look at other areas of need. I don’t know if necessarily that would be the spot to take someone like him,” he said.

So who will the Eagles pick at No. 8?

Philadelphia appears to be “in love” with Ezekiel Elliott, and vice president of football operations Howie Roseman commented on the bruising Ohio State running back, saying, “It’s hard to find three-down backs. And when you get a chance to look at someone like that, it changes the discussion.”

Offensive line is another position of need and if Ole Miss Laremy Tunsil miraculously falls in the draft, he could be a tackle the Eagles might target. “He’s probably the clear-cut favorite at tackle to be the first one off the board. I think he’s definitely that good,” Pederson said.

Notre Dame’s Ronnie Stanley is another option at No. 8 and Pederson believes he’d be able to kick inside at guard if need be. “I think he’s a guy that has great length, great athleticism. He can bend, he can anchor,” the head coach explained.

UCLA’s Myles Jack is suddenly a wild card after his medical recheck drew mixed reviews.

Roseman may have hinted at Jack being a possibility at No. 8. “By virtue of the numbers we have to add linebackers,” he said. As for trading back from the eighth spot, don’t count on it, Roseman added, “It’s going to have to be good.”

We’ll find out for sure what the Eagles do in the first round next Thursday.
