Doug Pederson on Fletcher Cox: “I Was Just Happy That He Was Back”

Doug Pederson is happy, Fletcher Cox is happy, everybody’s happy!

Pederson spoke to the media about his star defensive tackle Cox showing up for the mandatory three-day mini camp that began Tuesday.

Pederson stated that he and Cox didn’t talk about any contract discussions between he and the Eagles. Pederson’s just excited to have him back.

“I was just happy that he was back, I had a chance to visit with him yesterday and just tell him how excited I was. I understand voluntary process, the whole offseason, but we’re excited to get him here this week,” he said.

Cox released this statement earlier Tuesday.

I’m happy to be back in Philadelphia to get back to work with my teammates and coaches. I’m excited for this upcoming season and I can’t wait to get back on the field for mini-camp this week, learn our new defense and do whatever I can to help our team win. Any discussion about my absence from the offseason program or my contract will be handled privately between me, my agent and the Eagles organization.

Like everybody else in Philadelphia, Pederson just wants to get the deal with Cox done.

“I’m just hoping it’s done, bottom line. Let’s get it done and let’s get in here. And he wants to be here, he misses the guys, you can tell,” he said. “I’m fully confident something will get done before camp.”

Pederson explained that Cox will be limited in practices due to his skipping of the voluntary practices

“We want him to be in the meetings, we want him to go through the walkthroughs. We want him to get as many mental reps this week as we can,” he said. “We understand that not being here, we don’t want to put him out there and risk injury. He’s definitely a big part of this football team and now is not the time to see exactly what he can do because he’s proven that.”

Pederson strayed away from commenting on Cox’s decision to skip the voluntary workouts.

“It’s a voluntary offseason, it’s his decision. Any of the guys can stay away. I don’t get into that. I’m not going to look in the past, I’m looking forward and he was here today, he was here yesterday and I’m excited to have him,” he said.
