Jay Wright on Taking Ben Simmons or Brandon Ingram as the No. 1 Overall Pick

National champion Jay Wright joined the WIP Morning Show today and Angelo Cataldi asked him if he’d take Ben Simmons or Brandon Ingram with the number one overall pick. Here’s what Wright said:

I would bring those two guys in and just sit down and talk with them and get a feel for which one of these guys will embrace being a leader of a program and the organization and will take responsibility for the other players in the organization and being a leader in the city of Philadelphia and not be the guy that wants to be “the star” individually.

They’re both close enough in terms of talent. Whichever one of them would want to play for their teammates, play for their coaches, play for the Sixers … whichever one of them would want to do that is the one I would pick.”

This answer from Wright doesn’t surprise me. He’s a basketball coach and a national champion, and he looks at everything differently than any of us do. Cataldi then asked him if Wright can teach a kid “how to shoot a lot better than he is” when they go to him. Wright’s answer?

Yes.”

Nice. Wright went on to talk about the differences between LeBron James and Steph Curry in shooting ability, but by that point, the interview was already over.
