Last year all the buzz leading up to the draft was if the Philadelphia Eagles could trade up and land Marcus Mariota. After failing to reel in Chip Kelly’s golden boy, the Eagles were back at it again this year and were successful in their pursuit of a potential franchise-saving quarterback.
Eagles defensive tackle Mike Martin, who played with Mariota last year while with the Tennessee Titans, compared he and Carson Wentz during a weekend interview with SiriusXM radio.
He believes they both have similar personalities.
“Both great guys, just likable guys,” Martin said. “He’s (Wentz) a funny dude, got a good sense of humor and I’m excited to see how things go for him. He’ll have a great career with his attitude and if he keeps working the way he works.”
Mariota is more laid back and “let’s his play talk for him.”
“He’s a little bit more on the quieter side,” Martin said. “When I looked back at my rookie year, I was like that too. You’ve got rookies that are a little more quiet. You don’t want to ruffle any feathers, you don’t want veterans kind of saying whatever they want to say about you. If you just keep your mouth shut and go to work, nobody can say anything.”
“He lets his play talk for him. Carson is the same way. It’ll be exciting to see how he develops this season, for sure.”
Martin is also very excited about playing for Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz.
“I feel like it’s a rebirth for me in my career,” he said. “The defense is all about attack style, getting upfield, just making plays and being disruptive.”
