Baltimore Orioles catcher Caleb Joseph was sent to the hospital on Monday after he took a ball off the bat of Travis Shaw, which subsequently injured him. It might not sound all that serious until you see exactly where the ball hit him.

Please excuse me while I throw up in my mouth. All of us guys know that intense feeling of agony when this has happened to us in the past from an overly confident friend “ball tapping” us or a girl who thought it was funny (that’s even worse). Now just imagine it happening from a baseball traveling at professional rates of speed.
Ow.
Joseph stayed in the game, remarkably, but was sent to the hospital after the game ended. I can’t imagine how he was able to move around after that. I just can’t.
If that isn’t enough to make you cringe, here are more details from O’s manager, Buck Showalter:
Decided to take Joseph down and get him checked out. The urologist didn’t like some things and they went in and did what they did.
“I’m not going to get into all the details, but definitely DL…there’s not a whole lot of history that, if you have this done and you’re a catcher, when will you be able to catch again. So obviously not in those 15 days.”
Sometimes even a cup can’t help much.
