So, uh, this morning I posted an excerpt of Larry Bowa’s interview on The Mike Missanelli Show from Monday saying that the Phillies were going to have to limit Vince Velasquez’s pitch count this season due to the number of innings he’s pitched.
The most innings Velasquez has pitched in any baseball season is just over 124. He had already pitched about half of that heading into today’s game against the Cubs. Velasquez threw two pitches to start the game and then was promptly taken out.
Cameron Rupp clearly knew something was wrong right away after the first pitch. After a fly out on Velasquez’s second pitch, he left the game with what the Phillies are calling right biceps soreness.
It almost couldn’t be more perfect timing. Bowa says they’re going to limit Velasquez’s innings. We post it the morning of his next start. After two pitches, he’s out. He also tapped Bowa in the dugout before he left. Hmmm…
Velasquez has had an injury history, which is part of the reason the Astros sent him to the Phillies in the Ken Giles trade. We’ll keep you abreast of the biceps soreness.
