After Ryne Sandberg flew the coop last June, Pete Mackanin was named interim manager for the Phillies through the end of the season. He then returned after signing an extension through this season and next season after already signing a one-year deal for this season. Crazy, right?
While the fact remains Mackanin probably won’t be with this team for the long term (you know, that’s what they said about Terry Collins in New York, too), he’s still pretty outspoken and it’s fresh to hear. He fined his own players in spring training and won’t give Odubel Herrera, who’s now an All-Star, any leeway when it comes to hustling and playing hard. And he showed that again this morning during an appearance on the WIP Morning Show.
When asked about Herrera’s baserunning, Mackanin could only laugh and say that even though he’s an All-Star, the Phillies’ center fielder still has some warts. Listen to his comments below.
