The past is the past as they say and in Philadelphia, we’ll be judging Dorial Green-Beckham on what he does in the future.
He’s been given a fresh start, a clean slate and now needs to make the most out of the opportunity.
Brian Dawkins was a guest on The Mike Missanelli Show on 97.5 The Fanatic Wednesday and discussed Green-Beckham among several topics. He explained why the Eagles would bring him in despite the extra baggage.
“If you look at the talent on the football field, that’s obviously the reason that he’s given this opportunity. And one thing that I know about the past, the past you can either learn from it or do some the same things going forward. And our hope is that he’s learned the things he’s done in the past, that he’s corrected some of those things and that this is a new opportunity for him to come into an organization that’s looking for positives from it. And giving him that new opportunity to redefine who he is and put a stamp on what his legacy is going to be in the league going forward. It’s not about the past right now.”
With the Eagles losing a lot of draft compensation over the next few years due to the Carson Wentz trade, Howie Roseman has taken a few chances on players with checkered pasts. The Eagles didn’t have a second-round pick in this year’s draft, but theoretically, this move can almost be seen as using that selection on Green-Beckham, who was taken in the second round last year.
Philadelphia also took chances on Wendell Smallwood and Jalen Mills in this past draft. Dawkins explained how the organization plans on dealing with these types of players.
“It’s not just me, this is an organizational thing. There’s going to be a lot of different individuals taking a lot of pride helping these guys understand what it’s going to take to be a Philadelphia Eagle. What are the things that are going to be asked of them to not just play here, but have success here hopefully for a long period of time. This is a challenge that we’ll all be accepting, not just me to help these young men flourish a lot more on the football field and off.”
Dawkins described what his role in the organization entails.
“It’s going to be still learning about football operations and everything that goes with it,” Dawkins said. “I’ll dabble in player development, I’ll dabble in player engagement, I’ll dabble in scouting and give my opinion in a lot of different areas. It’s not just everything in just one basket, I’m able to do a lot of things for the organization going forward.”
