What’s Happening in Philly This Weekend: Jan. 20-22

Each weekend, we will post some of the most unique social and culture places to visit in addition to exciting events in and around the Philly area. We call it Philly Influencer’s Weekend Picks. Events Continuing Through the Weekend:

1. Art After 5


Where: Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2600 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy.
When: Friday, January 20th, 5PM-8:45PM

Every Friday, the Philadelphia Museum of Art kicks off the weekend with their “Art After 5” music and arts series. There’s live music and gallery access simultaneously. The museum offers a wide range of cocktails, beverages, and tapas-style cuisine from Starr Catering. This week, Broadway star Michael Cunio will be providing the live entertainment. Known for his work on Jersey Boys and as a former member of Under the Streetlamp, Cunio will bring his signature vocals to liven up the evening.

2. Young Professionals Night: Winter Shimmer


Where: The Barnes Foundation, 2025 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy.
When: Friday, January 20th, 7PM-10PM

The Barnes Foundation continues its “Young Professionals” series. This is the first event of its kind for 2017. This Friday, “Winter Shimmer” will be joining many of the energetic and eager young minds in the area. This art, glamour, and cocktails event is hosted by Contemporaries and is sponsored by Blue Moon. There will be live music, food,  and cocktails. Guests will also be able to take-in all the various artistic masterpieces on display at #BarnesYP night.

3. Brotherly Love Concert at TLA


Where: Theater of the Living Arts, 334 South St.
When: Friday, January 20th, 8PM

DSE Live & Artist First, Inc brings the “Brotherly Love Benefit Concert for Jeff Bradshaw” to the Theater of the Living Arts this Friday. Considered a “Philadelphia Jazz and Soul Son”, Bradshaw has dedicated his life to his musical passions and talent. Hosted by Eric Roberson, the concert will have performances by Jill Scot, Kenny Lattimore, Raheem DeVaughn, Bilal, Robert Glasper, Najee, and more. A portion of the proceeds will go to the GRAMMY MusiCares Foundation.

4. Brandon T. Jackson


Where: Punch Line Philly, 33 E Laurel St.
When: Friday, January 20th 8PM & 10:15PM  & Saturday, January 21st, 7:30PM & 9:45PM

Comedian, actor, and entertainer Brandon T. Jackson is coming to Punch Line Philly this weekend. Jackson has been seen in several successful films such as, “Tropic Thunder”, “Percy Jackson, The Lightning Thief”, “Roll Bounce”, and other productions. Jackson executive produced and starred in an Oxygen Network and Esquire Network docu-series “Comedians of Los Angeles.” Come to get all your laughs in this Friday and Saturday and watch one of the bright young talents in comedy.

5. WXPN Presents Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls


Where: The Fillmore Philadelphia, 29 E Allen St.
When: Friday, January 20th, 7PM

English singer-songwriter and folk act Frank Turner & The Sleeping souls will be gracing the stage at The Fillmore this Friday. To this date, Turner has released six solo studio albums. The latest project Positive Songs for Negative People was released in August 2015. Turner is backed by The Sleeping Souls which includes Nigel Powell, Matt Nasir, Tarrant Anderson, and Ben Lloyd. This act will bring their own brand of acoustic rock and entertainment to your Friday night.

6. The Pine Barrens Screening with The Ruins of Friendship


Where: The Rotunda, 4014 Walnut St.
When: Friday, January 20th, 8PM

Bowerbird presents this special screening of David Scott Kessler’s documentary “The Pine Barrens: Whitesblog Edition”. The event will include a live score and performance by The Ruins of Friendship Orchestra. The film entails a vivid unfolding of the New Jersey Pineland’s. It will feature picturesque views, the history of the local towns, forests, rivers, and more of this beautiful landscape. The film explores the sometimes corrosive relationship between man and the elements.

7. Villanova Pregame Party at Xfinity Live!


Where: Xfinity Live! 1100 Pattison Ave.
When: Saturday, January 21st, 9:30AM-12PM

The Villanova Wildcats will be taking on the Providence Friars this Saturday night. Before the AP No.1 team takes on this Big East opponent, Xfinity Live! will be hosting an exciting pregame party. This is a rare opportunity for the area’s energetic fans to interact with some of their favorite players. The 2016 National Championship trophy will be in the building. Villanova mascot Will D. Cat and the Villanova cheerleaders will also be in attendance. Don’t miss the Wildcats Walk at 10 a.m.

8. Winterfest Brewfest at the RiverRink


Where: Blue Cross RiverRink, 101 s Columbus Blvd.
When: Saturday, January 21st & Sunday, January 22nd, 1PM-8PM

Winter always brings so much to sustain us through the season. There’s the joy of the holidays, the emergence of a new year, and great beers. Philadelphia’s biggest outdoor ice skating rink is the Blue Cross RiverRink. For several months, the structure has been energizing the area with WinterFest. This weekend there will be a Brewfest. There will be a fantastic lineup of local and regional craft brews. There are free complimentary beer samples and pay-as-you-go pints available.

9. Flip cup Tournament at Field House


Where: Field House, 1150 Filbert St.
When: Saturday, January 21st, 1PM-4PM

Field House will host this 1st Annual flip cup tournament for a good cause. The Greater Philadelphia Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association presents “Flip for Brains”. Half of the proceeds of the $30 individual pre-registration entry fee will go to scholarships for students in the local area. Contestants can also pay at the door for a single fee of $35. Teams of five can pay a reduced rate of $125. First place receives cash, a trophy, and tickets to February’s Liberty Ball. There are also 2nd and 3rd place prizes.

10. Annual Chinese New Year Celebration


Where: Penn Museum, 3260 South St.
When: Saturday, January 21st, 11AM-4PM

In line with Penn Museum’s World Culture Days celebration series, the institution will kickoff their Chinese New Year celebrations this Saturday. The Year of the Rooster will be on full display at the museum’s 36th annual celebration. There will be traditional Chinese music, zodiac gallery tours, tangram workshops, calligraphy, hung fu martial arts demonstrations, Asian films, Asian American art, and more. The grand finale will include a lion dance parade with thunderous drums.

11. Beat Society at Johnny Brenda’s


Where: Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 Frankford Ave.
When: Saturday, January 21st, 9PM

The producer showcase Beat Society will be on full display this Saturday night. Johnny Brenda’s will host this eclectic and stylish musical demonstration’s return to Philadelphia. The producers include Hank McCoy, DJ Pppz, Bear One, and Antman Wonder. There will be a live DJ and performances by Chill Moody and Reef The Lost Cause, and a special surprise guest. Tickets are $10 in advance.

12. Delinquent Comedy


Where: The Centre Theater, 208 DeKalb Pike
When: Saturday, January 21st, 8PM

There’s thrilling and exciting entertainment in various locations outside of the city everyday. This weekend is no exception. Delinquent Comedy comes to Norristown, PA this Saturday night. The comedic lineup includes Tommie Turner, Bino Brogden, Brian Isley, and headliner Chris Stenta. Domo Jones will host this event that’s sure to bring gut-busting laughter for all in attendance this Saturday night. Tickets are $15.

13. Sevyn Streeter at The Foundry


Where: The Foundry, 29 E Allen St.
When: Saturday, January 21st, 8PM

R&B, pop act, and songwriter Sevyn Streeter brings her sultry vocals to The Foundry this Saturday night. Streeter has written songs for Alicia Keys, Ariana Grande, Brandy, Chris Brown, Usher, and more. Streeter released her first EP Call Me Crazy, But… in 2013 and followed it up with the EP Shoulda Been There. Pt. 1 in 2015. Streeter will be releasing her debut studio album Girl Disrupted on January 27th. She’s already released singles from the project including the song “Before I Do”.

14. Philadelphia Great Bridal Expo


Where: Sheraton Philadelphia Downtown, 201 N 17th St.
When: Sunday, January 22nd, 12PM-4PM

This is the second weekend in a row that a bridal expo and showcase takes over The City of Brotherly Love. The Sheraton Hotel hosts the Philadelphia Great Bridal Expo this Sunday. There will be countless dress makers, photographers, designers, and more. Here you’ll be able to visualize and create the concept of your special day. Come meet with several experts to make your nuptials like no other. The ticket price is $10.

15. Center City Restaurant Week Begins


Where: Various Locations
When: Begins Sunday, January 22nd and runs through Sunday, January 29th

Center City District Restaurant Week returns this Sunday. The dates for the beloved culinary celebration are: January 22nd-January 27th and January 29th-February 3rd. Each participating restaurant and establishment offers a delicious and savory specialty menu. Three course dinners will be $35 and three course lunches will be $20 at each location. There will be over 120 eateries ready to immerse you in the most tasty and sumptuous delights the city has to offer at a discount.
