In the world of sports and entertainment, we sometimes forget that the stars themselves are human beings and deal with the same instances in life we do, whether it’s good or bad. Unfortunately, today was one of those tragedies that is bigger than the world of sports and one that hits close to home.
The ESPN name has been in the news for many reasons over the last few weeks, but today is a day they’d rather not be on the front page of the newspaper. Katherine Ann Berman, wife of ESPN broadcaster Chris Berman, was one of two people who died in a car crash in western Connecticut on Tuesday. The fatal crash reportedly happened during a mid-afternoon drive that quite possibly could have been part of a medical emergency. This is something troopers are still investigating at the current time.
ESPN President John Skipper released the following statement:
“This is a devastating tragedy and difficult to comprehend. Chris is beloved by all his ESPN colleagues and for good reason: He has a huge heart and has given so much to so many over the years. We know how much his family means to him and all we can do at a moment like this is give him the love and support he will surely need at this hour. Our thoughts and prayers are with Chris, Meredith, Doug and the entire family.”
According to state police, Berman’s Lexus rear-ended another vehicle, continued down an embankment and eventually overturned in a small body of water. The other vehicle also veered off the road, striking a utility pole and landing in the middle of the road on its roof. The driver also died at the scene. No matter what the details are, this is a terrible tragedy that affects a great deal of people. The support around the league continues to roll in:
Chris Berman is one of the most recognizable sports broadcasters in the history of televised sports. We all know the history behind his rise along with the synonymous marriage to the phrase “BBBBAAAAAACCCKKKKK.” His Swami picks and Baseball Tonight theatrics will forever be a part of many highlight reels that reside across the sporting world.
Katherine and Chris were together more than 30 years. Their love will live forever in the hearts of each other and will only grow stronger through this unfortunate event. Love him or hate him, Boomer needs our prayers now more than anything. Let’s rise up and answer his call!
