The 76ers Released Gerald Henderson

The Philadelphia 76ers released veteran guard Gerald Henderson on Friday.

Henderson, who averaged 9.2 points and 2.6 rebounds per game, was set to make $9 million this upcoming season and the Sixers had to pay $1 million to cut him.

“We want to thank Gerald for being a consummate pro that he is and for adding so much to our growing basketball program and culture,” Sixers president Bryan Colangelo. “Gerald’s professionalism, leadership and basketball contributions were a big part of our organization’s development this past year.”

Henderson started 41 games for the Sixers during his lone season with the team, but saw less and less playing time as the year went on due to rookie Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot’s emergence. The Philadelphia native played his high school ball at Episcopal Academy and his father, Gerald Henderson Sr., suited up 134 times for the Sixers between the 1987-88 and 1988-89 campaigns.
