What’s Happening in Philly This Weekend: Dec. 8-10

Each weekend, we will post some of the most unique social and culture places to visit in addition to exciting events in and around the Philly area. We call it Philly Influencer’s Weekend Picks. Events Running Through the Weekend

1. The Nutcracker

Where: Academy of Music, 240 S. Broad St.
When: Runs through Sunday, December 31st

George Balanchine’s ballet The Nutcracker is one of the most celebrated theatrical pieces of each holiday season. The Christmas themed production will be running at the Academy of Music through the end of the month. Come see the pageantry of the Sugar Plum Fairies, The Rat King, and the royal court this weekend.

2. Beautiful Decay

Where: The Wilma Theater, 265 S. Broad St.
When: Runs through Sunday, December 10th

BalletX’s Beautiful Decay premiered in 2013 to great acclaim and success in the area. The resident dance company of The Wilma Theater welcomes you to a night of energetic movement, engrossing choreography, and bold dancing. Come see this great artistic endeavor before it’s too late.

3. Friday Night at the Museum

Where: Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2600 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy.
When: Friday, December 8th, 5PM-8:45PM

The Philadelphia Museum of Art promotes this great cultural and musical showcase each week. This week’s Art After 5 series features jazz vocalist Rhenda Fearrington. The event, titled Silver and Gold, will have live music, small bites, audience sing-a-longs, and special guests.

4. Earthquake

Where: Punch Line Philly, 33 E. Laurel St.
When: Friday, December 8th & Saturday, December 9th

Punch Line Philly is one of the premier comedy clubs in the city. This weekend comedian and personality Earthquake takes the stage. He’s done acts on BET’s ComicView, HBO’s One Night Stand and Def Comedy Jam, and more. If you’re looking for great laughs this weekend, then this is the place to be.

5. Andrea Bocelli

Where: Wells Fargo Center, 3601 S. Broad St.
When: Friday, December 9th, 8PM

Italian classical singer Andrea Bocelli will be lighting up the Wells Fargo Center this Friday night. Along with the Philly POPS orchestra, the award-winning vocalist has dozens of collaborative, live, studio opera recordings. This will be a night that includes one of the signature voices of our time and a phenomenal musical accompaniment.

6. German American Weekend

Where: Christmas Village in Love Park, 1400 JFK Blvd.
When: Saturday, December 9th-Sunday, December 10th

Seasonal treasure Christmas Village will be hosting its German American Weekend over the next few days. There will be authentic German food and drink, dancing, live performances from choirs, and more. There will also be plenty of crafts and garments for sale in the vicinity.

7. National Liberty Museum Free Entry

 

Where: National Liberty Museum, 321 Chestnut St.
When: Saturday, December 9th, 10AM-5PM

The Free Museum Days series has been sweeping across the city since the beginning of December. This Saturday morning the National Liberty Museum will be entertaining the masses for no cost. Come see the beautiful installations, artistic pieces, and diagrams that are the signature of this venue.

8. Holiday Second Saturday

Where: East Passyunk Ave.
When: Saturday, December 9th, 11AM

This Saturday something spectacular will be happening on East Passyunk Avenue. It will be Holiday Second Saturday. Guests will be able to ride Bobtails’ Wagon, get dazzled by  the Megan Flynn Dance Company’s performance,  and listen to the holiday brass band and carolers. There will be ice carvers, Santa roaming the area, and food and beverages being sold nearby.

9. 2017 South Philly Handmade Brigade

Where: 1241 Carpenter St.
When: Saturday, December 9th, 11AM-6PM

The 2017 South Philly Handmade Brigade is this Saturday. The free to enter mercantile event will have a massive amount of vendors selling handcrafted collectibles, jewelry, crafts, home goods, candles, fixtures, furniture, and more. Come get some much needed ceramics for your place or pick up a one-of-a-kind present for the people in your life.

10. Running of the Santas

Where: Electric Factory, 421 N. 7th St.
When: Saturday, December 9th, 11AM

The Electric Factory is getting in the festive spirit this Saturday. The 20th Annual Running of the Santas will have over a dozen musical acts hitting the stage. This mega Santa party brings thousands out each year. The concert drink specials include $4 Yuengling, $5 Jim Beam, $5 Hornitos

11. Philly Ugly Sweater Crawl

Where: Howl at the Moon, 258 S. 15th St.
When: Saturday, December 9th, 12PM-10PM

Drink specials will be aplenty at the 2017 Philly Ugly Sweater Crawl this year. Starting at Howl at the Moon, this event will have $1-$3 beers all day, $1 sliders, and more. In its third year, the energetic drinking excursion will swag bags, complimentary liquor shots at participating stops, and ugly sweater awards.

12. Rittenhouse Row Holiday Fashion Crawl

Where: Rittenhouse Row
When: Saturday, December 9th, 1PM-4PM

Another type a crawl pops up on the list at twelve. The Rittenhouse Row Holiday Fashion Crawl will kick off this Saturday at 1PM. This event will merge the best in holiday fashion with music, drinks, and live entertainment. Several stores in Rittenhouse Row will have special discounts, trunk shows, and more.

13. The Sound of Music Screening

Where: The Kimmel Center, 300 S. Broad St.
When: Saturday, December 9th, 1:30PM

The Kimmel Center will be holding a screening of the 1965 classic film and musical The Sound of Music this Saturday afternoon. The film has been restored in 4K that provides stunning visuals like you’ve never seen. The center will also be doing an organ demonstration 30 minutes before the screening in Verizon Hall.

14. Afro-Village Craft & Gift Market

Where: Franny Lou’s Porch, 2400 Coral St.
When: Saturday, December 9th, 3PM-8PM

Shopping and gift giving is truly the name of the game over the next coming weeks. Come to Franny Lou’s Porch this Saturday for a cultural collective and a shopping experience like other. African apparel, candles, jewelry, art, essences, tea, and more will all be up for sale at this fantastic shopping gathering.

15. Army vs. Navy

Where: Lincoln Financial Field, 1 Lincoln Financial Field Way
When: Saturday, December 9th, 3PM

The Navy Midshipmen and the Army Black Knights will be squaring off at Lincoln Financial Field this Saturday night. ESPN’s College Gameday will be broadcasting from XFINITY Live! for this annual football battle full of rich tradition and history. Before the game, 7-Eleven will be presenting the Philadelphia Veterans Comfort House with a donation to aid in the development of permanent housing and stability for servicemen.

16. Parade of Lights

Where: Independence Seaport Museum, 211 S. Columbus Blvd.
When: Saturday, December 9th, 5:30PM

The Independence Seaport Museum’s annual holiday show returns this weekend. Local working boats will be lit up, begin to twinkle and shimmer, and fill the water with the joys of the season. There will be tons of activities for the whole family. Santa will be in attendance, an arts and craft shop, a make your own snow globe station, and more.

17. Go West! Craft Fest

Where: The Rotunda, 40th and Walnut St.
When: Sunday, December 10th, 10AM-4PM

The Rotunda on Walnut Street will be bustling with busy shoppers this Sunday morning and afternoon. There will be seventy local vendors selling their handmade crafts, art, and goods. This is a free to enter and rain or shine event. Don’t miss out on an opportunity to stop by the commercial market this Sunday.

18. Villanova vs. La Salle

Where: Wells Fargo Center, 3601 S. Broad St.
When: Sunday, December 10th, 1PM

Just because the Eagles are across the country and the 76ers tipoff in New Orleans, doesn’t mean you can catch championship caliber sports in the city this Sunday. Local products Villanova Wildcats and La Salle Explorers will be going head-to-to head at the Wells Fargo Center. This inner region faceoff will be full of excitement and great basketball.
