1. Closing Soon: Matilda at Walnut Street Theatre
Where: Walnut Street Theatre, 825 Walnut St.
When: Runs through Sunday, January 6th
Walnut Street Theatre has been putting on a production of this beloved Roland Dahl’s novel over a month. Matilda The Musical features all the treasured characters that made the text one of the most well-known children’s books and film over the past few decades. Come see the book brought to life like nothing you’ve ever seen before in the form of a Broadway musical that has won 18 Best Musical wards.

2. Closing Soon: Old City Historic Holiday Events
Where: Various locations
When: Runs through Saturday, January 5th
Old City has been transformed into a holiday gem over the last few weeks. Shoppers enjoyed extended hours at the shops, special menus at local restaurants and bars, and events at galleries. This last weekend will feature several celebrations and whimsical gatherings.

3. Closing Soon: Longwood Christmas
Where: Various locations
When: Runs through Sunday, January 6th
Longwood Gardens always has a fantastic Christmas display. The beautiful conservatory has been trimmed and laced with several Christmas lights and fixtures for the holiday season. The season’s ending means the massive colorful fountain that has been dancing to your favorite holiday classic will soon cease. Come check out the half-million lit and glowing park before it’s too late.

4. Philly Loves Bowie Week
Where: Various locations
When: Friday, January 4th-Sunday, January 13th
David Bowie died in January 2016. To commemorate the loss of the music legend and universal talent, Philadelphia created Philly Love Bowie Week. There are a series of art displays, concerts, Bowie themed nights at tattoo parlors, quizzo, brunches, happy hours, movie screenings, plays, and other theatrical workings.

5. Three Kings Day Celebrations
Where: Various locations
When: Friday, January 4th
Taller Puertorriqueño will be hosting El Día de Reyes festivities this Friday from 3PM-5PM. The Kimmel Center will be having a Three Kings Day event on Saturday evening which includes a Three Wise Men reenactment, music, traditional food. For those in a partying mood, the Painted Bride Art Center will be having a blowout party for the cultural holiday. The cultural space will be transformed into “a sultry cabaret-style dancehall”. There will be dance instructions and a night of live entertainment.

6. First Friday! at The Barnes
Where: Barnes Foundation, 2025 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy.
When: Friday, January 4th, 6PM-9PM
The Barnes Foundation continues its First Friday! series this Friday with this amazing musical showcase. Pianist Alfred “Alfie” Pollitt, who’s written over 100 songs and toured extensively with R&B superstar Teddy Pendergrass, will be playing at the museum. Bassist and composer Tony “TNT” Jones will also be onstage with Pollitt to immerse the crowd in a night of top-tier musicianship.

7. Friday Nights at the Philadelphia Museum of Art
Where: Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2600 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy.
When: Friday, January 4th, 5PM-8:45PM
The Philadelphia Museum of Art hosts Friday night extravaganzas. These great cultural and musical showcase always displays talented artisans. This week’s Art After 5 act will be Rosali. The folk songstress will be performing songs from her second album, Trouble Anyway.

8. Old City First Fridays
Where: Various locations
When: Friday, January 4th
Each First Friday of the month Old City opens its galleries and studios for a little fun. Several participating spaces will have painting collection, wood workings, sculptures, furniture, metal works, and more all throughout several buildings. The workings are landscape shifting, contemporary, and visually stunning. There are also mesmerizing musical productions in the area.

9. Frankford Ave First Fridays
Where: Various locations
When: Friday, January 4th
Old City isn’t the only neighborhood celebrating the first Friday of the year. Fishtown will be brimming with art, culture, food, and more. January’s First Friday! will feature special Happy Hours, food tasting events, tango classes, art sales, poetry readings, art shows, and several other activities.

10. Havana Nights

When: Friday, January 4th, 8PM
For another event offering live music, World Cafe Live will be hosting Havana Nights this Friday evening. This is a free event full of Latin flair and music. There will be authentic food and drinks available for purchase. Come out for the amazing salsa music and tear up the dance floor.

11. David Arnold

Stand up act and comedy writer David Arnold will be performing at Punch Line Philly for multiple nights this week. The Def Comedy Jam, Shaq’s All-Star Comedy Tour, and The Ruckus alum is in the process of creating his own TV show and comedy special produced by Philly star Kevin Hart. Each weekend in the City, several areas in the city are filled with produce and handmade crafts. Head over to Clark Park Farmers’ Market, Headhouse District Farmers’ Market, Rittenhouse Square Farmers’ Market, Market at the Fareway in Chestnut Hill, or Fairmount Farmers Market for all your needs. For those in collegiate domains, there’s a weekly University City Farmers’ Market and Cecil B. Moore Farmers’ Market.

13. Storytime at the Lodge
Where: Blue Cross RiverRink, 121 N. Columbus Blvd.
When: Saturday, January 5th, 11:30AM-12:PM
The Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest is always one of the true gems of the holiday season. The rink hosts several thematic events, parties, and gatherings at its adjacent lodge. This Saturday bring your kids out for storytime. Books are chosen by the Free Library of Philadelphia and snacks and hot chocolate will be provided for the kids.

14. Pennsylvania Bridal & Wedding Expo
Where: Pennsylvania Convention Center, 1101 Arch St.
When: Saturday, January 5th and Sunday, January 6th, 11AM-5PM
This weekend the Pennsylvania Convention Center will be taken over by wedding gown designers, florist, wedding planners, DJs, photographers, and more. 15. Flames vs. Flyers

This Saturday the Philadelphia Flyers will be taking on the Calgary Flames. The team is in the middle of a three-game homestand and would like nothing more than to crawl up from the bottom of the Metropolitan Division. Bring your spirit and hype to the Wells Fargo Center this weekend.

16. Mavericks vs. 76ers

Staying in the same arena, The Philadelphia 76ers look to continue stacking wins as they take on Dennis Smith Jr., Luka Dončić, and the Dallas Mavericks. When: Sunday, January 6th, 10AM-5PM
The Philadelphia Museum of Art and The Barnes Foundation will be having their monthly First Sunday events. This Sunday at the Philadelphia Museum of at is Family Festival: Days of Knights. You can handle real armor, take part in a knighting ceremony, and there will crafts. The Barnes Foundation’s PECO Free First Sunday Family Day: Barnes Big Draw will have a number of activities. There will be an art making station creating a “doodle mural”, storytime, baloon animals, and much more.

2019 Philly Home Show
Where: Pennsylvania Convention Center, 1101 Arch St.
When: Friday, January 11th-Sunday, January 13th and Friday, January 18th-Sunday, January 20th
The second and third weekends of the month will be filled with wonderful interior and exterior home splendor. The 2019 Philly Home Show will take place between the 11th and 13th and the 18th and 20th of the month. This is the 38th year of the annual this show representing all things in your household. The massive event features more than 225 service professionals and exhibitors. Don’t miss your chance to obtain advice from favorite TV home show experts and learn new project skills in hands-on workshops. Matt Blashaw, host of HGTV and DIY Network shows Yard Crashers, Money Hunters, and several other shows will be in the building as well as Clint Harp of HGTV’s Fixer Upper and DIY Network’s Wood Work. Several local home designers will be on location for highly interactive demonstrations.
