Yes, the miraculous run came to an end Sunday night.
In what could only be described as a matter of lightning striking twice – or even a miracle almost repeating itself – the New Orleans Saints ended the Philadelphia Eagles’ season in heartbreak.
Nevermind the plays that could have been made on the field. That’s not important now. What’s important is how the Eagles will move ahead in regards to not only their roster, but their quarterback position. It basically boils down to Nick Foles vs. Carson Wentz.
The odds are still against the Eagles keeping Foles. This is highlighted by the fact that Doug Pederson said yesterday that Wentz is the Eagles’ quarterback moving forward. So where will Foles end up?
If the Eagles pick up the option on Foles, the Super Bowl LII MVP can pay back $2 million to explore free agency. The two sides could also work together to try and work out a trade with another team – preferably one Foles would like to go to and become their starting quarterback.
It’s clear Wentz is the Eagles’ future, and this situation is as unique a situation any NFL team has seen in recent memory. There are some Eagles fans who want Foles to stay and for the team to explore trading Wentz. But it seems like the decision-makers with the Eagles have their mind made up and Wentz is indeed the quarterback to build around.
The Eagles already have immense talent on the offensive side of the ball. They’re going to need to add depth on the offensive line to ensure Wentz has the protection he needs to stay healthy. Sure, Foles was a statue in the pocket, but he made quick decisions and didn’t turn the ball over nearly at a clip as Wentz did this season.
One thing’s for sure: the Eagles need Wentz to stay healthy to make a legit run at another Super Bowl next season. If that doesn’t happen, many qill be wondering, “Why did they get rid of Foles again?”
