What’s happening in Philly this weekend: August 2-4

Each weekend, we will post some of the most unique social and cultural places to visit in addition to exciting events in and around the Philly area. We call it Philly Influencer’s Weekend Picks. 1. Cirque Du Soleil: AMALUNA

Where: The Greater Philadelphia Expo Center | 100 Station Ave | Oaks, PA
When: Runs through Sunday, August 25th

Cirque Du Soleil: AMALUNA continues it’s amazing run this weekend. The amazing heights and tremendous athleticism is assuredly something you shouldn’t miss. Come get swept away and captivated by spectacular displays and wonder that Cirque Du Soleil is known for.

2. Phillies Weekend

Where: Citizens Bank Park | 1 Citizens Bank Way
When: Runs through Sunday, August 4

The Phillies are trying to crawl their way back into the playoff race. With the series against the Giants behind them, the team will look to keep the momentum going the weekend. The Chicago White Sox will be coming to Citizens Bank Park for an early August showdown.

3. Philadelphia International Unity Cup

Where: James Ramp Memorial Recreation Center | 3300 Solly Ave
When: Runs through Sunday, August 25

52 teams will be dueling it out in the city all month long. The Philadelphia International Unity Cup is back for another year. There will be a special kick-off event this Friday night. Italy and Jamaica will get the action going this Saturday. Both the event and games are free to attend.

4. BlackStar Film Festival

Where: Various locations
When: Runs through Sunday, August 4

The Black Star Film Festival continues this week and runs through Sunday. The cultural celebration will feature a massive number of documentaries, shorts,  and feature films celebrating the African diaspora. There will be a selection of 60 films made by black creators from around the globe on display.

5. Philadelphia Women’s Theatre Festival

Where: Hamilton Family Arts Center | 62 N. 2nd St
When: Runs through Sunday, August 4

The Philadelphia Women’s Theatre Festival will be entertaining the crowds this weekend. In ti’s fifth year, the festival celebrates the talent and accolades of these great performers. The lineup of events at this female-driven showcase will blow you away.

6. Events at The Oval

Where: The Oval | 2451 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy
When: Runs through the season

The Oval has been open for business for a few weeks. The fun and imaginative arc near the Philadelphia Museum of Art features many exciting activities. There is live music, basketball and tetherball areas, a beer garden, an oversized sandbox, and more. This Friday, you can catch Top Gun for free as a part of the summer movie screening series.

7. Franklin Square Fountain Show

Where: Franklin Square | 200 N. 6th St
When: Runs through the season

Franklin Square welcomes you to view its newly renovated 180-year-old fountain and see the dazzling light show on display through the summer. This week also marked the squares 13th birthday. The new fountain show will have daily performances beginning at noon and running every 30 minutes until 2 p.m. Evening performances start at 6 p.m. and run every 30 minutes. There will be Throwback Thursdays, Flashback Fridays, Super Movie Saturdays, and more events.

8. Black Panther

Where: Dilworth Park | 1 S 15th St.
When: Friday, August 2 | 8:30 p.m.

Blockbuster hit and billion-dollar enterprise, Black Panther will be screened at Dilworth Park this Friday. The free screening is a part of the Summer Pictures in the Park series. The first 100 people will receive free popcorn thanks to TD Bank. Bring a blanket and some friends out for a night of action and entertainment.

9. Beer Gardens

Where: Various locations
When: Runs through the season

Trails on TapParks on TapIndependence Beer GardenCollins Wine GardenPHS Pop-Up, and several other beer gardens in the city will help you perfectly navigate a summer day with a cocktail in hand. The weekend will be beautiful and flowing with people at any of these locations.

 

10. Old City First Friday

Where: Various locations
When: Friday, August 2

Each Frist Friday of the month the Old City District of Philadelphia opens several of its shops and galleries for special features. Over 40 galleries will have exhibitions, gallery access, events, and more. Many restaurants in the vicinity will have specials and discounted menu options. The streets will be filled with live music, artisans, vendors, merchants, performers, and more.

11. Frankford Ave First Fridays

Where: Various locations
When: Friday, August 2

Old City isn’t the only neighborhood celebrating the first Friday of the month. Fishtown will be brimming with art, culture, food, and more. August First Friday! will feature special Happy Hours, a pop-up gardens, jewelry sales, DJ parties, and several other fun activities.

12. Friday Night at the Museum 

Where: Philadelphia Museum of Art | 2600 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy
When: Friday, August 2 | 5 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.

Each Friday, the Philadelphia Museum of Art has a weekly Final Fridays series each week. The event merges music, art, cocktails, small plates, culture, and crafts. This Friday, drummer Darrell Green and saxophonist and singer Camille Thurman will be performing.

13. Lighthouse Parade and Glow Party at Bartram’s Garden

Where:  Bartram’s Garden | 5400 Lindbergh Blvd
When: Friday, August 2 | 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Come to Bartram’s Garden this weekend its Lighthouse Parade and Glow Party. The West Powelton Steppers & Drum Line will lead a precession from the neighborhood and into the garden for some nighttime fun. This glow-in-the-dark adventure is appealing to all ages.

14. Shawn Wayans

SHAWN WAYANS

Where: Punch Line Philly | 33 E. Laurel St
When: Friday, August 2 and Saturday, August 3

This weekend at Punch Line Philly renowned comedian Shawn Wayans will be taking over the main stage. The In Living Color, Scary Movie, The Wayans Brothers entertainer has several credits under his belt. This will be a great showcase of a comedic talent that has sustained in the industry for decades.

15. Philly Free Streets

Where: North Broad St between Arch St and Butler St
When: Saturday, August 3 | 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

On some early mornings, you can take a stroll down Broad Street and not be bothered by the bustling of cars or the sounds of a vibrant city. This Saturday morning, you’ll be able to feel that element for hours. The Philly Free Streets initiative will be shutting down some roads and freeing them of vehicular traffic. Pedestrians, walkers, bikers, and all are welcomed to roam. During Free Streets, Pop Yp beach on Broad Street will also return. You’ll be able to play beach games, layout in the sun, and pull up a relaxing chair at this pop-up oasis. They’ll be umbrellas, vendors, and most importantly fun.

16. Peach Festival 

Where: Linvilla Orchards | 137 W. Knowlton Rd | Media, PA
When: Saturday, August 3 | 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The days of Summer always brings exciting outdoor excursions for the whole family. Linvilla Orchards Peach Festival kicks into gear this weekend. The family tradition of the Delaware Valley will have live music, costumed characters, hayrides, playground fun, and so much more.

17. Queen + Adam Lambert

Where: Wells Fargo | 3601 S. Broad St
When: Saturday, August 3 | 8 p.m.

Rock legends Queen and megastar Adam Lambert will be performing at the Wells Fargo Center this Saturday night. The borage of hits that will be bestowed on the arena will be unmatched at this high-octane show. This will be a wonderful night full of entertainment and great musicianship.

18. Museum Sundays

When: Sunday, August 4 | 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Sunday come to The Barnes Foundation for PECO Free First Sunday Family Day: Summer Fun! There will be art-making and crafts, storytime, a dance performance, a film screening, and more. The jazz and soul act Sistahs Attune will also be performing. Stop by the Philadelphia Museum of Art for pay-what-you-wish Sunday as well. Additionally, The Barnes and the Philadelphia Museum of Art have teamed up for the second summer in a row to offer the I HeART Summer promotion, featuring 20% discounted admission. Visitors save $10 when they purchase I HeART Summer combo tickets between June 1 and September 21, 2019. I HeART Summer combo tickets are $35 (Reg. $45). Tickets can be purchased at philamuseum.org or visitors can mention “I HeART Summer” on-site or over the phone at the Barnes or the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

19. ACANA Festival

Where: Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing| 101 S Christopher Columbus Blvd
When: Sunday, August 4 | 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The PECO Multicultural Festival Series will continue its community-enhancing events and cultural showcases this weekend. ACANA Festival will include an entire day off of music, performances, food, games, arts, vendors,  and more. This family-friendly event will be heralding the achievements and rich history springing from the African diaspora.

20. 2nd Street Festival

Where: North 2nd St between Germantown Ave and Green St
When: Sunday, August 4 | 12 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Now in its 11th year, the 2nd Street Festival will be taking over Northern Liberties this Sunday. The area’s local shops, restaurants, and bars will all be bursting with special deals and storefront attractions. There will also be live music, food, and much more. Artisans will be out in the streets selling handmade goods. This free event will have food trucks, merchants, and includes more than 100 vendors.

21. Philadelphia Soul 

Philadelphia Soul vs Washington Valor

Where: Wells Fargo | 3601 S. Broad St
When: Sunday, August 4 | 4 p.m.

The AFL Playoffs are in full swing! The Philadelphia Soul will be taking on the Washington Valor this Sunday afternoon. The former champs will have their work cut out for them but with the assistance of a raucous crowd, they’ll look to come out on top.

22. Eagles Open Practice 

Philadelphia Eagles

Where: Lincoln Financial Field | 1 Lincoln Financial Field Way
When: Sunday, August 4 | 7 p.m.

This Sunday is the first and only Eagles open practice for the 2019 season. Lincoln Financial Field will be packed as Carson, Alshon, BG, Jenkins, D Jax, and many other favorites take the field. The players will be running through a full practice in front of a capacity crowd of the bleeding green faithful.
