Eagles ride strong first half to eliminate Giants, reach NFC title game

The Philadelphia Eagles have owned the New York Giants in recent history at Lincoln Financial Field and that trend continued Saturday as Nick Sirianni’s squad advanced to the NFC Championship game by eliminating their division rivals.

Philadelphia scored 28 first-half points to propel them to an eventual 38-7 divisional round victory over the Giants. Quarterback Jalen Hurts threw two touchdown passes, while also adding one on the ground as the Eagles clicked on offense for a full 60 minutes.

Hurts led the Eagles down the field on their opening drive of the game, connecting with high end Dallas Goedert for a 16-yard score. Goedert scampered into the end zone and gave the Eagles a 7-0 lead early.

The Giants struggled to get much going in the first quarter, being forced to punt on two drives while quarterback Daniel Jones was intercepted by corner James Bradberry. Hurts extended the Eagles lead to 14-0 before the end of the quarter, hitting DeVonta Smith for a nine-yard touchdown.

The Eagles continued their dominance on both sides of the ball in the second quarter as Boston Scott rushed in a three-yard score. Another strong Eagles defensive drive helped Hurts cap off a 14-play, 72-yard drive by rushing in from five yards out.

Matt Breida’s eight-yard touchdown run in the third quarter gave Brian Daboll’s squad their only points of the game.

Jake Elliott’s 30-yard field goal propelled the Eagles to a 31-7 lead in the fourth quarter before Kenny Gainwell’s 35-yard rushing score in the final moments padded the hosts lead for good. Haason Reddick and Josh Sweat excelled on the defensive line, contributing 1.5 sacks apiece.

Giants star running back SaQuon Barkley was held to 82 total yards on the night.

The Eagles will host either the San Francisco 49ers or the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship next Sunday.
