2023 NFL Draft: Eagles trade up to No. 9 overall, select Jalen Carter

The Philadelphia Eagles added a big defensive piece in the form of Jordan Davis during the 2022 NFL Draft and Howie Roseman trusted the University of Georgia’s defense once again for his team’s first selection in Thursday’s first round.

Jalen Carter was selected No. 9 overall by the Eagles on Thursday after Roseman traded with the Chicago Bears to move up one pick from No. 10. Carter helped anchor the Bulldogs defense in 2022, which allowed the fewest rushing yards per game in NCAA Division I (77.1).

Carter earned First-Team Associated Press All-American and All-SEC honors despite missing time during the Bulldogs title run with knee and ankle injuries. He finished the 2022 season with 32 tackles, 7 tackles for loss, three sacks, three pass breakups, and two forced fumbles in 13 games played.

Playing alongside Davis and Devonte Wyatt during the 2021 season, Carter was a Second-Team All-SEC selection as Georgia won the National Championship. He totaled 37 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, two blocked kicks in 15 games played.

A former standout at Apopka High School in Florida, Carter joins a dangerous Eagles defensive line which already features Brandon Graham, Fletcher Cox, Josh Sweat, and the pass rushing abilities of outside linebacker Haason Reddick.

The Eagles also hold the No. 31 overall selection in Thursday’s action.
