Building a Safer Philadelphia: GBCA advocates for citywide safety amidst soaring summer temperatures

Even as we verge on fall, the thermometer hasn’t gotten the memo, with Philadelphia still sizzling under summer-like temperatures. The General Building Contractors Association (GBCA) – the voice for union commercial builders in and around Philly – is all about looking out for us, making sure our city stays just as safe as a construction site secured tighter than the lips on a secret.

Safety Cultivation in Construction
By investing in us – the people who toil and transform the city’s horizons, GBCA seeks to ensure that we all get to clock out healthy and hearty each day. With tons of invaluable resources, from face-to-face safety training sessions to easily accessible online workshops and super-convenient mobile ‘Toolbox Talks’, they deliver the essentials right into our hands. Talk about making it stick with simplicity and accessibility!

In the words of Mr. Top Boss himself, Benjamin J. Connors, Esq. CAE, GBCA President & CEO, “Keeping people safe, whether they’re striding through a construction site or just plugging in an extension cord at home, is about taking care of our own”. However, sometimes, our best efforts, incidents still occurs, in which case a workers compensation lawyer should be contacted, who will be able to assist you.

Beat the Heat
The intense sun not only makes conditions for outdoor workers like construction teams, landscapers, and camp guides blistering, but the indoor scene ain’t any cooler. Workers holed up in construction spots, warehouses, and restaurants where the AC’s as absent as snow in a desert are facing the sizzle, too.

Sidestepping Everyday Hazards
Can you believe the typical safety risks we see on construction sites are just about the same as those anyone can encounter at home or in other jobs? James McGugan, GBCA’s resident Safety Consultant notes “it’s about managing the everyday stuff – using extension cords correctly, being alert about spills and falls, handling ladders the right way”. It’s the little reminders that can keep accidents at bay.

Keep these safety hacks in mind:
1. Toss out extension cords that look worn out or show naked wires.
2. Remember the ‘three points of contact’ rule for ladders (two hands and a foot, or two feet and a hand).
3. Keep your path in sight when walking, especially when holding something, to avoid tripping.
4. Stay off your phone when walking or driving near bustling construction sites.

Safety is a gigantic jigsaw puzzle, where each player holds a piece. Let’s fit them all together, shall we?
