Would Chip Kelly really walk away from the San Francisco 49ers following one season after signing a four-year, $24 million deal during the offseason?
Chip says no.
“Unless the media has an opportunity for me somewhere, I’ll always explore those opportunities,” Kelly said via The Mercury News. “But I’m not going anywhere.”
The rumors stemmed from Jason La Confora’s piece earlier on Thursday when he stated that we’ll be hearing a ton of Kelly returning to college rumors. It’s not like this is anything new, we heard it for years when Kelly was in Philadelphia. Here’s an excerpt from La Confora’s post.
Especially as boosters at top NCAA programs start putting feelers out all over the place. You’ll hear rumors about Jon Gruden and possibly Sean Payton as well (yes, even after just signing that long-term extension). With schools like LSU and Texasand Oregon and Penn State all possibly in that mix, it’s going to heat up soon.
Kelly’s offense continues to be ridiculed by his peers in the NFL, and several coaches I spoke to expect him to hit the eject seat button after this season and return to college before his stock continues to drop given the horrible roster he has in San Francisco.
“He just keeps running the same shit and it isn’t fooling anybody,” one NFL executive said. “Do you think they could bring him back to Oregon?”
Yes, there are going to be a ton of high-profile programs that will be in need of a head coach when the season is complete, but Kelly has a huge ego and wants to prove that he can make it in the NFL. We heard these rumors in Philadelphia too and nothing ever materialized. I don’t think he’s going back to college.
At least not yet.
