What’s happening in Philly this weekend: June 1-3

Each weekend, we will post some of the most unique social and cultural places to visit in addition to exciting events in and around the Philly area. We call it Philly Influencer’s Weekend Picks. Events Running Through the Weekend

1. Closing this Weekend: PAFA Student Exhibition 

Where: Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, 118 N. Broad St
When: Runs through Sunday, June 3rd

This weekend ends the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts’ The 116th Annual Student Exhibition (ASE). The institution’s BFA, third and fourth-year undergraduates, and second-year MFA students have had their works on full display. These emerging artist’s had the great opportunity to “curate, install, and sell their own works in PAFA’s museum galleries.

2. Closing this Weekend: Jane Irish Antipodes

Where: Lemon Hill, 1 Lemon Hill Dr.
When:  Runs through Sunday, June 3rd

Local artist Jane Irish has taken over this Fairmount Park’s classic two-floors of this historic structure for a one-of-a-kind art showcase. For months guests have had access to amazing installations, fixtures, and ceramics in this 19th-century mansion’s reimagining. Irish envisioned the walls, “of Lemon Hill will serve as antipodes—hemispheric opposites, each filled with her dialectical imagery of past and present, east and west, and war and peace.” Come check it out in its final weekend.

3. Closing this Weekend: Snow White at Arden Theater

Where: Arden Theatre Company,  40 N. 2nd St.
When: Runs through Sunday, June 3rd

The evil queen, the magic mirror, the poisoned apple, and the dazzling princess has been a shimmering spotlight on the Arden Theatre Company’s stage for months. The two-actor production will be closing this creative work this Sunday.

4. Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts

Where: Various locations
When: Runs through Sunday, June 10th

The 2018 Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts (PIFA) will be highlighting the Kimmel Center and several other institutions over the next week. Come take in dozens of live musical performances, dance productions, comedy shows, and high-flying feats.

5. Hand to Hand Circus Festival

Where: FringeArts, 140 N. Columbus Blvd.
When: Runs through Sunday, June 3rd

Come to FringeArts for the Hand to Hand: A FringeArts Circus Festival presented by PNC Arts Alive. There will be tremendous acrobatic, aerobic, and skilled artistry on display for the next few days at this event. There will be two free gatherings at this festival that will feature juggling, plate spinning, tight wires aerialists, and more.

6. Philly Beer Week

Where: Various locations
When: Runs through Sunday, June 10th

The 11th annual Philly Beer Week begins this Friday and runs through Sunday, June 10th. The brewing showcase will feature and highlight over 50 regional breweries. There will be countless beers on display at this week-long event starting with its Opening Tap event this Friday. There will be countless parties and events you’ll have fun navigating. From beer garden BBQs, to tastings, to beer pong events, and to beer Olympics, there’s something for everyone.

7. Roots Picnic Weekend

Where: Various locations
When: Friday, June 1st-Saturday, June 2nd

This weekend the Roots Picnic will descend on the city of Philadelphia. The Roots, Dave Chappelle, Lil Uzi, 2 Chainz, Brandy, and many other acts will be lighting up the stage. However, the party doesn’t just begin and end on Saturday.  Friday night Punch Line Philly with be hosting Delirious with Black Thought. There will be tremendous standup, live music, and more. Travis Scott will also be taking over NOTO Philadelphia this Saturday night.

8. Old City First Friday

Where: Various Locations
When: Friday, June 1st

Every first Friday of the month the Old City District comes alive. Several galleries and art houses in the area hosts special gatherings and workshops. This week come out to the 3rd Street Gallery, Painted Bride Art Center, National Liberty Museum, and more for any of their demonstrations. These events are truly an artistic treasure.

9. Collective Conscious: The Art of Social Change

Where: The African American Museum in Philadelphia, 701 Arch St.
When: Runs through Sunday, August 26th

The African American Museum in Philadelphia will be opening the Collective Conscious: The Art of Social Change exhibit this weekend. There will be an opening reception for the new project this Friday. Coem to this great institution to see and hear thoughtful works examining consciousness, the racial upheaval, socio-economic, and cultural issues.

10. First Friday at the Barnes

Where: Barnes Foundation, 2025 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy.
When: Friday, June 1st, 6PM-PM

The Barnes Foundation’s First Friday soiree is tonight. The series of jamborees always has great live music, cocktails, gallery access, and more. Tonight Tony Miceli, Francois Zayas, and Chrissie Loftus will be providing the music at this Afro-Cuban themed event. There will be Cuban sandwiches and other traditional bites at the party.

11. Rittenhouse Square Fine Arts Show

Where: Rittenhouse Square, 18th St. and Walnut St.
When: Friday, June 1st-Sunday, June 3rd

This will mark the 90th year for the Rittenhouse Square Fine Arts Show.  This weekend there will be140 artists on display highlighting several mediums of art. There will be global creatives selling their painting, sculptures, sketches, drawings, and several other pieces.

12. First Friday at The Curtis

Where: The Curtis, 601 Walnut St.
When: Friday, June 1st, 5PM-8PM

This new and creative artist series each Friday of the month. Philadelphia-based creatives James Inscho, Rebecca Jacobs, Andrea Lyons, and Denise Philipbar will have their pieces to displayed every four to six months in the 12-story atrium of the famed building. Ten percent of any sales donated doing the exhibits at the commercial space will go to PAWS for the month of June. Come out for an enchanting evening of wine, art, music, and more.

13. Latino Film Festival

Where: Caplan Recital Hall, 211 S. Broad St.
When: Friday, June 1st-Sunday, June 3rd

The 7th Annual Latino Film Festival kicks into gear this weekend. There will be several Latino-themed shorts, documentaries, feature films, and more on display at several locations in the city. Get a ticket to view several immersive and cultural productions, Q&As, panel discussions, and more.

14. Summer Sounds

Where: Various locations
When: Runs through Friday, September 7th

Sponsored by VISIT PHILADELPHIA,  the Summer Sounds concert series beginning this Friday night. Spruce Street Harbor Park will be filled with the music of DJ set by Matthew Law and Rich Medina. Each week there will be a new genre front-and-center. Every night will be propelled by great musicianship. Come out to these amazing outdoor concerts.

15. Celebration of Jamaica

Where: Penn Museum, 3260 South St.
When: Saturday, June 2nd, 11AM-4PM

June is Caribbean Heritage Month. Penn Museum will be highlighting the wonderful country of Jamaica this Saturday. There will be dance performances, workshops, stories and narratives being told, arts and crafts, and a Caribbean Feast food truck. This will be a fantaastic celebration that will beentertaining, informative, and fun.

16. Fete Day at Elfreth’s Alley

Where: Elfreth’s Alley, 124 Elfreth’s Alley
When: Saturday, June 2nd

Take a trip back to Historic Philadelphia this Saturday. Elfreth’s Alley Fete Day open the door to the past each year. Stroll down the streets with your friends and family. There will be plenty of colonial activities, games, live music, food, and so much more.

17. Jaws In Concert

When: Saturday, June 2th, 7:30PM

As soon as the sunshine hits, the city begins to brim with plenty of outdoor screenings and exciting amphitheater events. come to The Mann Center for the ” duunnn dunnn… duuuunnnn duun…” thriller Jaws. The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia will take the sights and sounds of this shark tale to new heights.

18. Justin Timberlake

Where: Wells Fargo Center, 3601 S. Broad St.
When: Saturday, June 2nd, 7:30PM

This Saturday night Justine Timberlake brings is Man of the Woods tour to the Wells Fargo Center. The tour supports his 2018 album with the same title. This pop star will be serenading the Philadelphia crowd with his countless hits, old and new.

19. Philadelphia Burger Brawl

Where: Xfinity Live! Philadelphia, 1100 Pattison Ave.
When: Sunday, June 3rd, 3PM-6PM

This Sunday is the Philadelphia Burger Brawl. The tastiest and best burger creations will be sampled at this outdoor festival. Over 60 local restaurants will be dueling it out to see who will be crowned king of burgers in the city.  This food challenge draws hundreds each year.

20. Philadelphia Irish Festival

Where: Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing, 101 S. Columbus Blvd.
When: Sunday, June 3rd, 12PM-7PM

Come to the Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing for the first event in the PECO Multicultural Series. The Philadelphia Irish Festival takes place this Sunday afternoon. There will be cultural food, dancing, musical performances, activities, and more.

21. La Festa

Where: Filitalia International, 1834 East Passyunk Ave.
When: Sunday, June 3, 11AM-7PM

This Sunday will be the 8th Annual “La Festa” Italian Festival. Filitalia on Passyunk Ave will be flooding with Philadelphians wanting to get in on a spaghetti eating contest, live Italian music, performances, wine demonstrations, food instructionals, and more. This is a rain or shine event.

22. Museum Sundays

Where: Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2600 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy. and Barnes Foundation, 2025 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy.
When: Sunday, June 3rd

The Sunday come to The Barnes Foundation for Free First Sunday Family Day: Summer Solstice.  There will be art-making and crafts, storytime, live music, mural assembly with Olek, and more. Also this Sunday, there will be a Barnes on the Block party from 4 p.m.-8p.m. The event will include a food truck takeover, live music, beer garden access, and plenty of activities.  Stop by the Philadelphia Museum of Art for pay-what-you-wish Sunday as well.

23. Radio 104.5 Summer Block Party

Where: Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing, 601 N Christopher Columbus Blvd.
When: Sunday, June 3rd, 1PM

AWOLNATION, lovelytheband, Flora Cash, Wallows & Deadfellow, and others will be rocking the stage at the Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing this Sunday. Radio 104.5 Summer Block Party series kicks off in the best way this weekend. Bring your friends out for this amazing summer show on the waterfront. This is a rain or shine event.
