Carter Hart has delivered some strong performances for the Philadelphia Flyers in the early stages of the new NHL season and Martin Jones followed suit on Saturday in the Nation’s Capital.
Jones made 31 saves as the Flyers rebounded to defeat the Washington Capitals 2-1 at Capital One Arena, earning their sixth win of the new season. Derick Brassard and Sean Couturier each scored goals for the Orange and Black, who held onto their lead for an important two points in the Metropolitan Division.
After a scoreless first period, the Flyers broke the deadlock with 8:42 remaining in the second period. Brassard’s wrist shot off of a Cam Atkinson assist beat Vitek Vanecek to give Alain Vigneault’s side a 1-0 advantage. It was Brassard’s second goal of the season.

Not long after taking the lead, the Flyers doubled their advantage as Couturier snapped an effort past Vanecek to further pad their lead. Claude Giroux and Rasmus Ristolainen were credited with assists on the fifth goal of the season for the veteran center.

Brett Leason’s first-career NHL goal pulled the Capitals to within one goal with 13:58 remaining, but the Flyers would defend the rest of the way to claim a first win over Washington this season.
The Flyers (6-2-2) will have three days off before hosting the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Wells Fargo Center on November 10.
