Flyers fight back to down red hot Hurricanes in Raleigh

The Philadelphia Flyers faced their toughest test of the NHL season so far on Friday night, but answered the call in a comeback victory on the road.

Joel Farabee and Alex MacEwen scored 6:14 apart in the third period to propel the Orange and Black to a 2-1 win, handing the Carolina Hurricanes only their second regulation loss of the season. Carter Hart made 39 saves in the triumph for Alain Vigneault’s team, continuing what has been a positive start to the new campaign.

After a scoreless first period, Rod Brind’Amour’s side opened the scoring with Steven Lorentz beating Hart on a deflected shot. Jordan Staal and Jesper Fast connected with Lorentz midway through the period, before the forward scored his second goal of the season.

With Hart continuing to keep them in the game, the Flyers equalized 4:06 into the third period as Farabee took advantage of a superb pass from Scott Laughton. Laughton’s bank pass off the end boards allowed Farabee to score his fourth goal of the season, wristing an effort past Frederik Andersen.

The Flyers continued to press for a winning goal and received one through an unlikely figure. MacEwen’s deflected shot nestled in the back of the net as the visitors took a late lead in Raleigh. Hart would make 12 saves in the third period to help the Flyers rebound from Wednesday’s home defeat to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

It will be a quick turnaround for the Flyers, who are back in action on Saturday against the Dallas Stars.
