While many thought the news of the Eagles reportedly releasing defensive end Fletcher Cox yesterday [first broken by Twitter’s @letsgo2thephone] was a sign they were beginning the rebuild of their defensive line, subsequent news has shown that the idea behind the release was likely only a cap formality.
Hours after the news surfaced, that very same @letsgo2thephone account reported Cox would likely return to the Eagles on a deal that would be heavy in incentives.

For a seasoned veteran who has clearly not been the same player that netted him the huge contract years ago, this sort of makes sense from a team perspective. It’d be tough to argue another team – even a bad team – would realistically match what the Eagles offered; at least not enough to have him move somewhere else on the other end of his career.
However, this NFL off-season has also seen its share of drama, and multiple reported deals have ultimately fell apart at the 11th hour, with players such as Randy Gregory of the Cowboys signing elsewhere, allowing us to continue making fun of the Dallas Cowboys.
As of this writing, nothing has been confirmed by the Eagles except Cox’s release.
