Jalen Hurts delivered a historic season for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2022 and the fourth-year gunslinger was rewarded with a long-term contract extension on Monday.
Hurts signed a five-year extension with the Eagles, which will reportedly total $255 million with $179.304 million being guaranteed, ESPN reported. The former University of Alabama and Oklahoma product helped the Eagles reach the Super Bowl this past February before falling short against the Kansas City Chiefs. His new contract will run through the 2028 NFL season.
Hurts totaled 374 combined yards in the Super Bowl, completing 27/38 passes for 304 yards and one touchdown. He also added 70 rushing yards and three touchdowns [a Super Bowl record for a quarterback] on 15 carries.
“I have had the opportunity to watch it [the Super Bowl] and I think I’m going to move forward with all of those experiences in mind and try to use those things to better myself and grow and help the guys around me and we’re going to definitely use that as an experience to take a step and move forward,” Hurts said in the Eagles end-of-season press conference in February. “You have to look yourself in the mirror and assess it for what it is and do the things that need to be done to grow from it. I think that’s my mentality going on and I think that will be this whole entire team’s mentality moving forward.”
Hurts, 24, took major steps forward in his third professional season, passing for 3,701 yards and 22 touchdowns during the regular season. He improved his completion percentage and yards-per-attempt while also contributing 760 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground.
The Eagles were 14-1 during regular season games in which Hurts started before a slight injury forced Gardner Minshew to play the final four games. Nick Sirianni’s squad did clinch the NFC East and defeat the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers during the playoffs before going toe-to-toe with Andy Reid’s Chiefs at Super Bowl 57.
