With the recent addition of Jerry Colangelo to the Sixers front office, there’s been immediate questions on whether Sam Hinkie will be around long term and who is in fact in charge of the basketball decisions on the team now. If you speak with Sam Hinkie, he’ll tell you that he’s the leader. But, what would you expect him to say? He’s just saying what he should say – or he’s saying what he really believes.
Lets’s be honest though. This is Jerry Colangelo’s team now. The process is over. That’s just my opinion though. Hinkie recently sat down with ESPN’s Zach Lowe to discuss the process within the organization and had the following to say.
“Our owners made it very clear they want me leading us long-term. Adding one more voice will make the conversation richer. Might it be challenging at times? I’m sure it will be. But making big decisions shouldn’t be easy — it shouldn’t be that you have an idea, and you get to execute it without anyone questioning it.”
With the Sixers signing Brett Brown to a two year extention, is it possible that Hinkie will be here for a couple more years? Sure it is. I see it more as a placeholder role, until Colangelo is ready to make his bigger moves. With rumors circulating that Josh Harris wants to flip the Sixers, I can’t see Hinkie’s role as anything other than a temporary role. Whatever the case may be, the Sixers organization is a whole lot more interesting than it was a week ago.
