Malcolm Jenkins Says He’s Unsure of How He Fits in Jim Schwartz’s Defense, Wants a Contract Extension

Malcolm Jenkins was on SiriusXM NFL Radio today, a couple days after appearing on ESPN’s SportsNation to talk about Chip Kelly, the Eagles and the Super Bowl. Among the topics discussed on SiriusXM, Jenkins addressed two key things: where he wants to play on the field next season, and he wants a new contract. Interestingly enough, Jenkins said he was “concerned” about where he will be playing in Jim Schwartz’s defense. Here’s the quote:

That’s what I’m probably most concerned and interested in seeing is – and I think everybody is – but what is my role in the defense and where do you see me playing? I personally think I’m more productive at the slot position, playing in that nickel and safety on first and second down, and then a sub coming in and playing nickel. Just because, you know, I can still cover. I’m a corner at heart, really. It puts me closer to the line of scrimmage. I’m closer to the ball. I get more production. When I play deep, I get bored. I’m just watching the game like everybody else. I got the best seat in the house.

Hmmm… it sounds like Jenkins is making his play to Schwartz right now to put him in the slot more often. That’ll be something to keep an eye on as we head to OTAs and training camp in the summer. The host then mentions Jenkins led the team in tackles, and with Roseman taking over the player contracts again, he implied Jenkins should probably feel like he wants a contract extension, given that he’ll become an unrestricted free agent after next season. Jenkins said he wants to continue to play here into the future.

Believe me, I’m waiting. I’m trying to get in line just like everybody else … That’s something I can’t control. But, I’m definitely interested [staying in Philly]. You know, I wanna be in Philly long-term. I really love playing there. I’m from Jersey. It’s like being back home … It’s definitely something I wanna do. But that’s usually not up to the player, the team’s gotta have that interest.”

With Roseman saying the Eagles have some money to play with, you’ve gotta think they will spend that money on Cox and Jenkins before trying to sign a big-name free agent.
