The Eagles Have Shown Interest in Running Back Alfred Morris

Will Alfred Morris be swinging for the fences in Philadelphia next season?

The Eagles are interested in the 27-year-old free-agent running back Morris, according to a report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

“Alfred Morris is in Dallas today visiting with the Dallas Cowboys. He’s actually got interest from three NFC East teams, the Dallas Cowboys, the Philadelphia Eagles, the Washington Redskins. He’s spoken to all of those teams but is in Dallas today,” Schefter said during an appearance on the ESPN NFL Insiders podcast Monday afternoon.

The 2012 sixth-round pick exploded onto the NFL scene as a rookie, finishing second in rushing yards with 1,613 to go with 13 touchdowns, but he’s been on a steady decline ever since. He ran for 1,275 yards and seven scores in 2013, 1,074 yards and eight TDs in 2014 and a measly 751 yards this past season. Morris dipped below the four yards per carry mark for the first time in his career (3.7) and found the end zone just once.

Whether this is a ploy to drive up Morris’ price tag or not, Philadelphia could use help at running back after trading DeMarco Murray to the Tennessee Titans a few weeks ago. Ryan Mathews is penciled in as the starter, but he’s missed at least two games a season during his six-year career. Darren Sproles is 33 and the 26-year-old Kenjon Barner has carried the ball just 34 times over his two-year career.

UPDATE: Alfred Morris will be staying in the NFC East, but he won’t be signing with the Eagles. His agent confirmed that the former Washington running back will sign a two-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys. So there’s that.
