Catching up with the Birds: Howie Roseman’s Stellar Offseason

That’s now two highway robberies in a month, Howie Roseman better get himself a really good lawyer.

The 2016 NFL offseason has highlighted all of Roseman’s strengths, manipulating the salary cap and making trades. Over the next few years we’ll see how Roseman overcome his weakness, talent evaluating and the NFL Draft.

Luck and some stupidity has presented a lot of opportunity for Roseman this offseason. He got rid of Byron Maxwell’s contract and linebacker Kiko Alonso to move up five spots in the draft, which later helped the Eagles get all the way up to No. 2 and land Carson Wentz.

Thanks Miami!

Roseman was able to get rid of DeMarco Murray’s contract, sending him to the Titans. And speaking of Tennessee and stupidity, Roseman sent a turnstile in Dennis Kelly to Nashville for the mercurial Dorial Green-Beckham, who was a second-round pick last year. That’s almost like having a second-rounder in this past draft, something the Eagles didn’t have.

Thanks Tennessee!

And then came the greatest fortune of all, the desperation of the Minnesota Vikings following the gruesome injury to quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. Roseman was not only able to pluck a first-rounder for Sam Bradford, but a fourth as well. The Eagles would’ve been lucky to get a second-rounder for Bradford following the conclusion of the season.

THANKS MINNESOTA!!!

It’s been a solid offseason, but we’ll find out in a few years if he’ll be able to land the right players in the draft to build around Wentz. That’s when we’ll really find out if the 2016 offseason was a precursor to potential greatness or Fool’s Gold.

On to the links:

Here’s the initial Bradford trade post. That fourth-rounder the Eagles received could turn into a second or third-round selection. Bradford is apparently “thrilled” with the trade, something that Denver Broncos coordinator Wade Phillips might’ve broken. Roseman explained why the Eagles traded Bradford during his press conference.

With Bradford now out of the fold, the Eagles will reportedly turn to Wentz to be the starter in Sunday’s opener against the Cleveland Browns if healthy.

The Bradford news made Saturday’s cuts an afterthought. Here were the final cuts. The Eagles made three waiver claims on Sunday, which unfortunately led to fan favorite Paul Turner being waived. I predicted the 53-man roster on Friday.

Turner’s big night on Thursday helped the Eagles finish the preseason undefeated.

Congressman Bob Brady leaked out the information in early July and it finally became official on Friday. The NFL Draft is coming to Philadelphia!

Jon Dorenbos’ semifinal act in America’s Got Talent stunned the audience again and now he’s in the finals.

Longtime radio announcer Merrill Reese and linebacker Jeremiah Trotter will be inducted into the Eagles Hall of Fame on November 28th when the Eagles play the Green Bay Packers on Monday night.
